One of our regular local customers is a partner in Historical Military Services (HMS), a historical military publisher and developer of HMS/GRD Games. These detailed WWII Europa military simulations have been around for more than thirty eight years. This season, HMS is releasing their new Total War game of Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union. As a taste of the game, the company released its’ set of six unfolded maps. The response to the company as exceeded all expectations and we felt some of our customers may be interested in the map set or the game itself. There are six maps in the 'Total War' set. Each map is 22.5 by 28.5 inches in size and the scale is 16 miles to a hex grid as they are based on a 1:1,000,000 map (where one inch = 16 miles). The maps cover the Soviet Union and adjacent regions (Finland, Poland, Romania, etc.) from Murmansk in the north to the Caucasus in the south, and from the western border east to the Volga River. The maps show the immense variety of terrain in the Soviet Union, with areas of woods, forest, swamp, wooded swamp, intermittent lake, wooded intermittent lake, balkha (regular and extreme), rough, wooded rough, mountain, high mountain, glacier, and three types of rivers (regular, major, and great). The rail, road, and riverine transport networks of the Soviet Union are also shown, as are the economically important resource centers (labeled as to type). A map legend covering all the terrain and map symbols appears in the corner of one of the maps. All the major cities of the Soviet Union are labeled, as are thousands of smaller towns, with the intent of making it easy, when reading books on the Eastern Front--like those by David Glantz, to follow along with the action referred to in the book. The Total War game itself has detailed (operational) Orders of Battle on the campaign drawing on the latest research and over three thousand counters representing the units. Aberdeen is able to offer the complete set of six unfolded maps in a triangular mailing tube for $50 shipping inlucded. The Total War game is $245 and includes an additional Soviet OB for the period 1939 to 1942 showing what the Soviet military would have looked like had the Axis not struck first.
