Among the subjects covered in this multi-volume series are field service uniforms, sports, drill, dress, armored personnel, tropical, and much more. Thomas Wittmann, C,O,
This book includes more than 700 professional photographs with over 100 printed in full color. The text follows the development of the Naval Dress Dirk after it was first introduced by Prussia as an official pattern in 1848. The book details the wearing tradition of the dirk as it continued to be carried by the German Navy for the next century, finally ending with the defeat of the Kriegsmarine in World War II. All periods are supplemented with rare in-wear photographs. With each buoyant era of German history the Naval dress dirk was altered to reflect changes in government status and the mood of the times. The book addresses all patterns together with the multitudes of beautiful and fascinating variations appearing over the one hundred year wearing time. To give life and perspective to each pattern, the history of the apropos period is covered with each chapter. There are a total of 28 Chapters. No reference has ever be written to equal this massive culmination of research - common and ultra-rare, Imperial, Weimar and 3rd Reich - over 15 years in the making. In addition to Naval dirks, the impressive gilded swords and detailed miniature types from all periods are also included. There are separate chapters dealing with the special dirks and swords of the Imperial royal family; the magnificent Naval Diamonds Honour dirks awarded to U-Boat heroes and retiring admirals, Presentation and Prize dirks of the Kriegsmarine; in-depth studies of the signature fittings, blade etches and scabbards attributable to specific manufacturers; rare maker and scant variation production; the impressive custom-etched, gold and blue inlay and damascus blades of all periods; the personal dirks of several U-Boat commanders - both Imperial Blue Max winners and Knight's Cross awardees. And, much, much more. Most photography is the work of acclaimed edged weapons photomeister, Charles Jenkins, III. All known current information is covered within this reference. Contributors include the world's foremost collecting community. Accuracy has been confirmed through intensive chapter-by-chapter review and consul with prominent Dutch Naval expert, Jan Pieter Puype. The complicated and tenuous editing function has once again been favorably tackled by William Warda, Jr. insuring a pleasurable, understandable "read" for all collectors - advanced or beginning. VOLUME 2: INFANTRY AND CAVALRY HELMETS: PICKELHAUBE, SHAKO, TSCHAPKA, STEEL HELMETS, ETC,; INFANTRY AND CAVALRY UNIFORMS: M1907, SIMPLIFIED 1915, FRIEDENSROCK 1915, FELDBLUSE 1915; INSIGNIA, IMPERIAL MARINE,
Johan Somers, C,O,
This two-volume set provides the reader with an insight into the wide range of uniforms, weapons and field equipment used by the Imperial German Army during the First World War. The devastating and dramatic character of the war required many innovations in military clothing and equipment. New uniforms and adequate protection was a must, and steel helmets appeared on the battlefield, replacing the outdated spiked helmets. Even medieval-looking items, like steel breastplates and trench clubs, were produced, giving the soldiers a fearful appearance. The threat of poison gas caused the immediate development of gas masks. It was also the time of the tank, observation balloons, mine warfare, the Zeppelin, airplanes, flame-throwers, deadly machine guns, and other war machinery that saw service, sometimes for the first time. Using over 1,000 color and period photographs from private collections and museums, the author succeeds in showing a broad range of artifacts, together with full and to the point descriptions. This series is aimed towards the novice or advanced German World War I collector and enthusiast, military history student, modeller, researcher and re-enactor. over 500 b/w and color photographs. 146. THE GERMAN REICHSWEHR: UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT OF THE GERMAN ARMY FROM 1919 TO 1932
Adolf Schlicht, C,O,
Uniforms and Equipment of the German Army from 1919 to 1932 For the first time this illustrated volume of 464 pages describes and shows in minute detail the entire clothing and equipment of the German Army from 1919 to 1932. More than 1000 photographs and illustrations show the appearance of the German Reichswehr, which developed in the Weimar Republic immediately after the first World War and whose uniforms and items of equipment were still in use up to the Second World War. During the experimental phase of the Provisional Reichswehr 1919/1920, an entirely new course was taken in the design of uniforms, but with the establishment of the final Reichswehr in 1920 uniforms received their last appearance with a return to more traditional designs. Following the German Army in the First World War, a modern standard uniform was created with an entirely new system of insignia. Its components, including insignia and personal items of equipment, are described in detail, and the text is based on comprehensive research of sources. All the items of clothing are shown to the viewer in brilliant colour photographs. For this purpose the assets of the Bayerisches Armeemuseum could be utilized for the first time, which also contain an impressive collection of original samples. Additions are provided by important artefacts from the Wehrgeschichtliches Museum in Rastatt and from private collections. Contemporary black and white photographs show the way the artefacts were worn or carried. Often the photographs show officers who were to gain military fame years later in the Second World War.

149. GERMAN SWORDS OF WOLRD WAR II: A PHOTOGRAPHIC REFERENCE, THREE VOLUMES
Thomas Johnson, C,O,
This three volume set on World War II German swords by LTC (Ret.) Thomas M. Johnson, a leading collector and authoritative researcher, is a follow-up to his successful and highly acclaimed four volume series on World War II German daggers by Schiffer Publishing (1995). Johnson is the author of some twenty-six reference books on the subject of German edged weaponry. This sword series has been designed to aid not only the beginning collector, but also the seasoned advanced collector and specialist. These volumes are the result of many years of arduous research conducted on both sides of the Atlantic, and are a scholarly study that is more than a perfunctory annotation and illustration of the known basis patterns. Also, the series is a study of a culture and the crafts that actually produced the blades, as well as being a manual in the art of collecting them. The embracing scope is both educational and recreational, and adds a whole new dimension to this popular collecting subject as a whole. Within these books one finds the historical background, the manufacturing techniques, constructional information, the actual basic patterns, variations and rarities, and a whole host of salient facts of absorbing interest. HORSES OF THE GERMAN ARMY IN WORLD WAR II
Paul Louis Johnson, C,O,
Volumes have been written on the equipment of the German Army of World War II, including tanks, trucks, motorcycles, weapons, and personal equipment, but little has been written on the horses that made up 80% of its transportation. Horses pulled everything an army needed in the field by wagon or on its back and more horses were used in World War II than in any other war in history. This book includes text from the U.S. Army Military History Institute publication MS #P-090. The participants of this study were among the most knowledgeable the German army could provide, and their conclusions constitute a critique of what probably was the last mass use of horses in warfare. If one really means to understand the performance and tactics of the Wehrmacht in World War II, one must understand the horse and its logistic requirements. Also, this book presents one of the most comprehensive photo collections of the men and equipment of the horse-mounted troops, including many excellent full color close-up photos of the uniforms, equipment, and all the various items for the horse and its care, great for collectors. over 500 b/w and color photographs.

A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO THE LUFTWAFFE
Christopher Ailsby, S,
Led by the flamboyant Hermann Göring, himself a fighter ace of World War 1, the Luftwaffe was probably the most glamorous part of the German armed forces during World War 2. With its pilots, such as Adolf Galland, becoming household names for the successes in the skies, the Luftwaffe was pivotal both to the early successes wrought by Germany in the war during the Blitzkrieg assaults on Poland and western Europe. It was, however, the failure of the Luftwaffe to achieve aerial supremacy over the English Channel and southeast England during the Battle of Britain that led to Hitler’s decision to cancel the invasion of Britain and, although the Luftwaffe was to achieve further significant victories in the east following the invasion of Russia, Göring’s failure to defeat the Royal Air Force and to prevent Allied bombing of Germany were to reduce significantly both his and the Luftwaffe’s standing with Hitler. In his fourth contribution to the highly successful ‘Collector’s Guide’ series, noted collector and expert Chris Ailsby examines the wide range of equipment, uniforms, medals and awards specifically associated with the Luftwaffe during World War 2. Alongside the detailed descriptions of the militaria being discussed are photographs and a ratings system designed to allow the user and reader to gauge relative values. Some 60 years after the end of World War 2, interest in Third Reich militaria remains strong and, inevitably, in any popular area of collecting there is material of doubtful provenance designed to catch out the unwary. The ‘Collector’s Guide’ series has proved an essential guide for those interested in the subject and this latest addition to the series will continue to build upon the considerable reputation that the series has built up over the years. Providing the collector with detailed and objective advice, the book should be essential reading for any active collector of Third Reich militaria as well as those interested in the Luftwaffe during the period from 1933 to 1945. TROOPS: AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN ASSAULT UNITS AND COMMANDOS IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Dr. M. Christian Ortner, huge, C,O
Austro-Hungarian Assault Units and Commandos in the First World War Tactics,
Organisation, Uniforms and Equipment. The assault troops ranked among the elite
units of the Austro-Hungarian army and permanently influenced the image of the
soldier in the static and trench warfare of the First World War. In trench
warfare, they had the assignment to remove enemy obstacles and to eliminate
sentries in hand-to-hand combat with hand grenades or with daggers and clubs,
thus enabling following attacking troops to reach their objectives. Equipped
with steel helmets, shortened rifles and hand grenades, supported by machine
guns, submachine guns and infantry guns, the assault trooper of the First World
War ultimately epitomised the ‘modern’ soldier of the twentieth century. This
impressive and lavishly illustrated volume comprises 320 pages and shows the
operational tactics, battle doctrine, organisation, uniforms and equipment of
the Austrian assault troops in the First World War in more than 850 contemporary
black and white and current fullcolour photographs. Clear views of submachine
guns, machine guns, trench mortars, infantry guns, flamethrowers and signals
equipment provide an impressive overview of the arms and equipment of the elite
of the k.u.k. army. These rare artefacts were mainly drawn from the inventory of
the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum Vienna. The book devotes a long chapter to
Austrian assault troop badges. It shows not only their genesis, but also
illustrates more than 100 assault troop badges as originals and on photographs
of their wearers. This is the largest hither to published number of such badges.

history. Nevertheless, it was only shortly before the outbreak of the First
World War that the Danube Monarchy could bring herself to form specially trained
mountain units. It was these troops – often outnumbered – who defended the
borders of their homeland in the high Alps under sometimes unimaginable
conditions and sacrifices. In this lavishly illustrated book, you can discover
with what uniforms and weapons the Austrian troops went up the mountains against
the enemy, what dangers and anomalies the k.k. mountain troops had to face in
the mountain war and, above all, what tactics developed in mountain warfare.
Mine warfare in the high mountains, fighting on glaciers and the development of
cable car systems round off the book. For the first time the assets of the
Tiroler Kaiserschützenmuseum in Innsbruck, which are not accessible to the
public, were photographed for this book, supplemented by rare artefacts from
private collections. approx. 1000 photographs and illustrations

DEUTSCHE SOLDATEN: THE UNIFORMS, EQUIPMENT AND PERSONAL EFFECTS OF THE GERMAN
1935-1945
Agustin Sainz, C,O,
There have been all manner of books written on the German Army since the end of
World War II. Books on the men, their tactics, commanders, equipment, weaponry
and histories of the major battles they fought in can be found on the
bookshelves of almost all 20th Century history enthusiasts. Deutsche Soldaten is
a stunning visual history of the German soldier and provides a unique reflection
of how the men lived, ate, and washed themselves on the front, or behaved when
at rest, what were their pastimes, ambitions, worries and how they spent their
leave, through the collections of personal items and other artifacts they left
behind. The author, an expert on 20th-Century military history and an avid
collector of military items from many different armies, makes available to the
general public for the first time all these artifacts which he has collected
over the years in order to create this complete illustrated history. This book
can best be understood as a G.I. Collector’s Guide (Histoire & Collections,
2005) for the German soldier. The treatment is very similar with page after page
of pieces of uniform and equipment the even the most knowledgeable collector
will find new items amongst. There are a great many close up photographs that
will be invaluable for collectors looking to see what the genuine article looks
like. Lavishly illustrated with thousands of color photographs, this large
format book is being jointly produced by Casemate and Andrea Press in Spain,

THE GERMAN INFANTRY FROM 1871 TO 1914
Ulrich Herr, Jens Nguyen, C,O, 2 volumes in a slipcase.
This two-volume, 864 page work gives the first complete and almost uninterupted
picture of the development of the uniforms worn by the German Infantry, from the
birth of the Empire in 1871 to the eve of World War I in 1914, with detailed
descriptions and illustrations. Due to the huge array of headgear, uniforms and
equipment, the book is published in two volumes with a slipcase, making it the
largest publication from the Verlag Militaria to date. The two volumes
illustrate the development of the uniform, starting with the Prussian Army, and
covering the integration of the other contingents, the Saxon Army, the
Wurttemberg Army Corps and finally the Bavarian Army, using around 1,600 colour
photographs and 500 contemporary black-and-white photographs, with sources and
newly researched archive material. Naturally, a work on this subject would not
be complete without special units and elite formations, so the uniforms of the
Jäger and Schützen are also included.
For the first time, the publishing house and the Bayerische Armeemuseum in it’s
function as editor were able to enlist the help of notable military museums in
Germany who co-operated on the book. The Bayerische Armeemuseum in Ingolstadt,
the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, the Wehrgeschichtliches Museum
Rastatt and the Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr in Dresden opened
their depots and allowed an unsuspected and largely unknown body of headgear,
uniforms and equipment to be photographed. The use of these and other, private,
collections made it possible, for the first time, to present an almost complete
picture of the development of German infantry equipment and uniforms.
Personal items of uniform owned by Emperors Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II, the
Prussian Crown Prince, the King of Bavaria and other well-known persons, along
with the headgear and uniforms of the common infantryman, are used to illustrate
the splendid and colourful diversity of the German infantry regiments up until
First World War. Also included are clear tables to guide the reader through the,
seemingly complex, variety of infantry units in the various contingents. This
superbly illustrated edition is not only a MUST for all military collectors; it
should be in the library of anyone interested in this period of history. 2100
photographs and illustrations in full color.

THE GERMAN ARMY MOUNTAIN SOLDIER OF WORLD WAR II
Wade Krawczyk, C,O,
The Mountain Troops of the German Army in World War II were an elite of a
special kind. Unlike the Panzer units, they did not field the mot modern
equipment of their day. Unlike the Waffen-SS, they were not hand-picked for
their Nazi loyalty. If anything, the respect attracted by their special cap and
their Edelweiss insignia was earned by rather old-fashioned miltary virtues - by
sheer physical prowess, in uniquely testing conditions. The Gebirgsjager had to
be able to do what other soldiers did - but in places where no other soldiers
had the strength and the skills to go, and often in weather no other soldiers
could face. This book identifies, describes, explains and illustrates the
uniforms, insignia and equipment that distinguished the Army Gebirgstruppen from
the rest of the Wehrmacht. It represents a deeply researched and detailed
reference for collectors of uniform items and decorations. Richly illustrated
with 300-plus photographs, including rare images, some of them provided by
surviving veterans. 260 colour and 40 black & white photographs,

THE GERMAN COLONIAL TROOPS FROM 1889 TO 1918: HISTORY, UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT
Jurgen Kraus, C,O,
This 600-page illustrated volume deals first with the history of Germany’s
colonial ambition, thus providing a historical and political framework. Starting
with the first tentative colonisation projects, this part of the book
concentrates on the years between 1884 (the establishment, under Imperial
constitutional law, of the first ‘protectorate’) and 1919, the formal end of
Germany’s colonial Empire with the Treaty of Versailles. It describes the
motives of a country striving to obtain ‘a place in the sun’ and the initial
reluctance of Reichs Chancellor Bismarck, who eventually conceded to the idea of
colonisation, and then deals in detail with the security organisation in the
protectorates as well as the special case of Jiaozhou, China. This introductory
section closes with the campaigns and military operations prior to the First
World War and the occurrences during the War, 1914 to 1918. The second part
deals with the uniforms and equipment of the Schutztruppen: based on the early
uniforms worn from 1889 in German East Africa and German South-West Africa, the
universal uniform for all ‘Imperial Schutztruppen’ was established in 1896.
Along with the representative grey home uniform, this also included a sand-coloured
or white tropical uniform adapted to the climate in the protectorates. In 1913,
the field grey uniform was finally introduced. Despite the basic form, uniforms
and equipment varied in the protectorates. All the various items, such as pith
helmets, caps, tunics and cartridge belts, are described here in great detail.
The African soldiers’ tropical uniform is also dealt with in a special section.
The troops for East Asia presented a completely different picture. Initially,
the East Asia Expeditionary Corps, sent out in 1900, was only issued an
improvised uniform, which made quite an exotic impression with its straw hats.
By 1901 the troops were issued special field grey winter and summer uniforms
with brand new helmets, pith helmets, tunics and equipment. These items were not
only worn by the East Asia Occupation Troops until 1909, they also became trial
models in the search for a new field uniform and many important elements were
later incorporated into the field uniform of the German Army. approx. 1000

206. SERBIAN
AND YUGOSLAVIAN ORDERS AND DECORATIONS
Pavel Car, C,O,
This illustrated volume with more than 600 pages presents a detailed picture of
the development of Serbian, and later Yugoslavian, orders, medals and
decorations between 1859 and 1941. This spans a period starting with the first
commemorative badges of the principality of Serbia and covers a system of awards
that reached its zenith in the later Kingdom of Serbia. After the end of the
First World War and the creation of the new kingdom encompassing Serbs, Croats
and Slovenes, a great diversity of medals and decorations evolved but this ended
abruptly with the collapse of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1941. More than 600
orders, medals, commemorative badges and more are shown here in a scale of 1:1
and the individual manufacturers and various models are dealt with in depth.
Detailed descriptions of these items of highly skilled workmanship are
complemented by the inclusion of the relevant ribbons, sashes, cases and
certificates. The authors worked closely with important museums and private
collectors to compile this book and were thus also able to present medals
belonging to famous historical figures such as the Austrian Kaiser Franz Joseph
I, the Turkish Sultan Mehmet V, Grossherzog Friedrich von Baden, Serbian
generals Jovan Belimarkovich and Milojko Leshjanin and Minister Jovan
Avakumovich among others. Recently many counterfeit medals and copies have come
onto the market. For this reason the authors have gone to great lengths to
explain just how to distinguish originals from reproductions and fakes. The
world of Serbian and Yugoslavian medals is presented here for the first time on
this scale with over 2,000 illustrations. This book is a must for anyone with an
interest in medals and decorations as well as those interested in learning more
about the historical development of Serbia and Yugoslavia. 1500 photographs,

THE GERMAN REICHSWEHR
Jurgen Kraus, C,O,
Uniforms and Equipment of the German Army from 1919 to 1932 For the first time
this illustrated volume of 464 pages describes and shows in minute detail the
entire clothing and equipment of the German Army from 1919 to 1932. More than
1000 photographs and illustrations show the appearance of the German Reichswehr,
which developed in the Weimar Republic immediately after the first World War and
whose uniforms and items of equipment were still in use up to the Second World
War. During the experimental phase of the Provisional Reichswehr 1919/1920, an
entirely new course was taken in the design of uniforms, but with the
establishment of the final Reichswehr in 1920 uniforms received their last
appearance with a return to more traditional designs. Following the German Army
in the First World War, a modern standard uniform was created with an entirely
new system of insignia. Its components, including insignia and personal items of
equipment, are described in detail, and the text is based on comprehensive
research of sources. All the items of clothing are shown to the viewer in
brilliant colour photographs. For this purpose the assets of the Bayerisches
Armeemuseum could be utilized for the first time, which also contain an
impressive collection of original samples. Additions are provided by important
artefacts from the Wehrgeschichtliches Museum in Rastatt and from private
collections. Contemporary black and white photographs show the way the artefacts
were worn or carried. Often the photographs show officers who were to gain
military fame years later in the Second World War.

THE EMPEROR'S BOSNIAKS: THE BOSNIAN-HERZEGOVINIAN TROOPS IN THE K.U.K. ARMY
Hermann Hinterstoisser, C,O,
Bosnia-Herzegovina was occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1878, annexed in 1908 and
was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. This book, illustrated in
colour, with 352 pages and nearly 600 photographs, presents a picture of the
Bosnian soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army and their military history under
Austro-Hungarian administration. Starting with the political and military
reasons for the occupation, through the annexation to the end of the First World
War, it takes the reader to a world that at the time was seen as highly exotic.
The Bosniaks, who were seen as an elite group within the k.u.k. Army and who –
with their strange uniform and fez headgear – attracted much attention from the
various formations of the Austro-Hungarian Army, are the focus of the book. This
richly illustrated volume also offers a detailed view of the uniforms, equipment
and weaponry of the Bosniaks, from the formation of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian
infantry and Jäger troops to their first deployment in the First World War, 1914
–1918. Finally, short biographies of numerous well-known people who served with
the Bosniaks, for instance the once Austrian President, Dr Adolf Schärf, give
the Old Army a face. Feared by their enemies, respected by their comrades for
their fighting spirit, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian troops were a reliable
component of the Austro-Hungarian Army until the end of the First World War.
This book, produced in co-operation with the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum
Vienna, the Austrian Federal Armed Forces and the Army Museum Budapest, as well
as private collectors, is also a project intended to bring together different
religious and ethnic groups The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Troops in the k. u. k.
Army. ca. 600 photographs, illustrations and tables.

THE HUNGARIAN HONVED ARMY: HISTORY, UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT OF THE HUNGARIAN
TERRITORIAL ARMY FROM 1868 TO 1918
Dr. György Sagvari, C,O,
About the book
Approx. 672 pages, ca. 2000 photographs,
As a result of the Austro-Hungarian settlement, after 1868 the Austro-Hungarian
Empire’s armed forces were made up of three separate parts: alongside the k. u.
k. Army, two separate territorial armies were formed, one for Austria and one
for Hungary. By the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Royal Hungarian
Territorial Army, known as the ‘Honvéd’, had developed, in virtually every
branch of arms, into a veritable Hungarian miniature version of the Common Army.
The Honvéd Army, with its motto, ‘For King and Fatherland’, embraced the
Hungarian soldierly traditions that had evolved from the revolution of 1848, the
Napoleonic Wars and the great hussar legends. This book details the development
of the small ‘second line’ Hungarian army from its formation to the fall of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918; its historical background and political
significance, as well as its structure, uniforms and equipment. The subtle
nuances and differences compared with the uniforms of the k. u. k. Army are
illustrated by many items of headgear, uniform and equipment. Contemporary
photographs, many of them never before published, and colour photographs of
items from the collections of the Museum of Military History in Budapest, and a
number of private collections, present a vivid and colourful picture of the
lives and work of the ‘Honvéd’. 2000 photographs
