JAPANESE
HYBRID WARSHIPS: ISE-HYUGA, MOGAMI, I 400-I 13
Hans Lengere, C,O, This book is already sold out at the North American
distributor.
Using authoritative Japanese technical standard publications and the
official Japanese war history and unpublished reports of the U.S. Naval
Technical Mission to Japan, the author describes three particular warship
types characterized by one common feature: The addition and primary use of
aircraft while maintaining the original armament either unchanged or in a
reduced form. The amalgamation of the features of fundamentally different
warship types such as the gun carrier and the aircraft carrier in one vessel
seemed promising, and the hybrid ship became an important theme in the
1920s. But none of the 'Big Five' built hybrids before the outbreak of World
War II. However, the prominent role of the aircraft was proven from the
first day of the Pacific War and after the defeat at Midway in June 1942 the
Imperial Japanese Navy investigated the conversion of the existing
battleships and heavy cruisers to aircraft carriers or hybrids. Following
this investigation, the author outlines the realized conversions of BBs Ise
and Hyûga to BB-XCV and CA Mogami to a CA-XCV, and then deals with the
aircraft-carrying submarines of I 400 class, which combined two
superlatives: the biggest SS of the world and the only one 'armed' with
three seaplane bombers for attacking major American coastal cities and the
locks of the Panama Canal. Due to the inability to produce the required
number of such submarines, the design of the I 13 class was changed to carry
two seaplane bombers and to operate in combination with ships of the I 400
class. The planned and executed operations of these ships are described with
reference to the official Japanese war history and supplemented by numerous
maps and track charts selected by the author from Japanese sources. Sander
Kingsepp, perhaps best known for his translations on the Nihon Kaigun
website, has supplied summarized translations on Mogami's reconnaissance
aircraft and the loss of I 13, which are both added as enclosures. 96 pages
in color, 180 profiles 2D and 3D, 176 b/w photos, 32 color photos, 141
drawings, 8 maps.

LUFTWAFFE MARITIME AIRCRAFT & UNITS
Adam Thompson, S,O,
As a companion to the successful Luftwaffe Colours ‘Sea Eagles’ titles, this
bright new book offers the reader a more detailed and varied study of the
maritime aircraft and operations conducted by the Luftwaffe against the
Allies in World War 2. The Luftwaffe committed a wide range of aircraft to
such operations from coastal reconnaissance, with shorter-range and
shipboard patrol floatplanes, to long-range U-boat liaison and transports;
for example, the Arado Ar 196 A, Dornier Do 18 and Do 24, Blohm und Voss Ha
138, Heinkel He 115, Junkers Ju 52, the enormous Blohm und Voss 222 Wiking
flying boat, and the equally impressive Blohm und Voss 238 – the heaviest
aircraft to have flown in the world. The operations of the extensive force
included ‘shadowing’ and long-range protection for U-boats under the
auspices of the ‘Fliegerführer Atlantik’, shipboard operations assigned to
the German capital ships, mine-laying, air-sea rescue, torpedo-bombing and
transport. Illustrations: c235 colour and mono illustrations

FW 200 CONDOR: THE AIRLINER THAT WENT TO WAR
Juan-Carlos Salgado, C,O,
This is a lavishly illustrated and highly detailed account of one of the
most elegant and deadly aircraft to see service during World War 2. Designed
and built in the late 1930s, originally as a civilian airliner to compete
with the American DC-2 and DC-3, the Fw 200 grabbed the international stage
when it broke the record for flying non-stop from Berlin to New York in
August 1938. However, it is for its role as a maritime strike aircraft in
World War 2 that the Fw 200 gained its reputation as the ‘Scourge of the
Atlantic’. Illustrations: c240 colour and mono illustrations

HEINKEL
HE 177 GREIF: HEINKEL'S STRATEGIC BOMBER
J. Richard Smith, C,O,
The He177 was a formidable warplane with the potential to have been a lethal
weapon for the Nazis. Unfortunately, it was ill-fated and suffered from
serious problems such as an inherently poor engine design and `knee-jerk'
role diversification by the commanders in charge. This book sheds new light
on this sometimes overlooked aircraft and its unique service history.

GERMAN
LEIGHTE PANZER AT WAR CONCORD 7066
Frank De Sisto, S,O,
After WWI, the Versailles Treaty forbade Germany to possess tanks. As a
result, the 1st Panzer, for reasons of secrecy, was actually called
Kleintraktor when conceived in 1930. This design became the Panzer I, and it
fought in the opening campaigns of the war despite being somewhat obsolete.
The heavier Panzer II appeared in 1936, and it too saw extensive service. In
addition to native designs, Wehrmacht fielded the Panzerkampfwagen 35(t) and
newer 38(t) - these captured vehicles were absorbed by Germany after it
invaded Czechoslovakia, and importantly these light tanks helped swell the
ranks of panzer divisions. This photo-essay showcases these 4 main types in
varied wartime terrain and locations. Illustrated with 172 b/w photos and 16
color plates;

THE GERMAN INFANTRY FROM 1871 TO 1914
Ulrich Herr, Jens Nguyen, C,O, 2 volumes in a slipcase.
This two-volume, 864 page work gives the first complete and almost
uninterupted picture of the development of the uniforms worn by the German
Infantry, from the birth of the Empire in 1871 to the eve of World War I in
1914, with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Due to the huge array of
headgear, uniforms and equipment, the book is published in two volumes with
a slipcase, making it the largest publication from the Verlag Militaria to
date. The two volumes illustrate the development of the uniform, starting
with the Prussian Army, and covering the integration of the other
contingents, the Saxon Army, the Wurttemberg Army Corps and finally the
Bavarian Army, using around 1,600 colour photographs and 500 contemporary
black-and-white photographs, with sources and newly researched archive
material. Naturally, a work on this subject would not be complete without
special units and elite formations, so the uniforms of the Jäger and
Schützen are also included.
For the first time, the publishing house and the Bayerische Armeemuseum in
it’s function as editor were able to enlist the help of notable military
museums in Germany who co-operated on the book. The Bayerische Armeemuseum
in Ingolstadt, the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, the
Wehrgeschichtliches Museum Rastatt and the Militärhistorisches Museum der
Bundeswehr in Dresden opened their depots and allowed an unsuspected and
largely unknown body of headgear, uniforms and equipment to be photographed.
The use of these and other, private, collections made it possible, for the
first time, to present an almost complete picture of the development of
German infantry equipment and uniforms.
Personal items of uniform owned by Emperors Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II, the
Prussian Crown Prince, the King of Bavaria and other well-known persons,
along with the headgear and uniforms of the common infantryman, are used to
illustrate the splendid and colourful diversity of the German infantry
regiments up until First World War. Also included are clear tables to guide
the reader through the, seemingly complex, variety of infantry units in the
various contingents. This superbly illustrated edition is not only a MUST
for all military collectors; it should be in the library of anyone
interested in this period of history. 2100 photographs and illustrations in
full color.

PRINCES
OF DARKNESS: THE LIVES OF LUFTWAFFE NIGHT FIGTHER ACES HEINRICH PRINZ ZU
SAYN-WITTGENSTEIN AND EGMONT PRINZ ZUR LIPPE-WEISSENFELD
Claire Rose Knott, C
Princes of Darkness is a unique illustrated account of the careers of
Heinrich Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Egmont Prince zur Lippe-Weissenfeld
- two aristocrats who served with the Luftwaffe's night fighter force and
whose lives were often interconnected. The book is the result of many years
research on the part of its author, Claire Rose Knott, who has been granted
unprecedented access to never before published diary notes, personal
correspondence, logbooks, and family photographs. The work also benefits
from research in archival resources, technical data and recollections
supplied by the Princes’ night fighter contemporaries. The text contains
firsthand accounts by family, friends and fellow officers who offer unique
accounts of the ambition, intensity and actions of the leading characters in
time of war. Over the years, the Princes have courted controversy with
several conspiracy theories regarding their deaths. The plausibility of such
theories when viewed against their aristocratic family backgrounds and
placed against the backdrop of intense social upheaval under the Nazi
regime, are investigated here. Prince Heinrich Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein was the
third highest scoring night fighter ace in the Luftwaffe who served from
mid-1941 until his death in 1944. He was killed when his aircraft was hit by
return fire from a bomber or by an RAF nightfighter. Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein
baled out but was killed by the impact of landing. His victory score at that
time of his death was 83 – 29 in the East and 54 in the West. Prince Egmont
zur Lippe-Weissenfeld, an Austrian, started his career as a daylight fighter
pilot, and became a nightfighter when serving under the famous Helmut Lent
as Staffelkapitän. He is accredited with 51 aerial victories while flying –
mainly the Messerschmitt Bf 110 – and is ranked 21st among the German night
fighter aces. He was killed on 3 March 1944 when his Bf 110 clipped the
ground and crashed during a flight over the Ardennes. The text is supported
by rare and fascinating photographs of the pilots’ aircraft, weaponry
(including the upward-firing ‘Jazz Music’ twin cannon) and radar equipment
as well as others in their squadrons, together with commissioned color
artwork of Messerschmitt Bf 110 and Junkers Ju 88 night fighters. 259 mono
and color photographs plus color artworks

AFTER
STALINGRAD: THE RED ARMY'S WINTER OFFENSIVE, 1942 - 1943
David M. Glantz, C
In the wake of the Red Army's signal victory at Stalingrad, which began when
its surprise counteroffensive encircled German Sixth Army in Stalingrad
region in mid-November 1942 and ended when its forces liquidated beleaguered
Sixth Army in early February 1943, the Soviet High Command (Stavka) expanded
its counteroffensive into a full-fledged winter offensive which nearly
collapsed German defenses in southern Russia. Exploiting newly released
Russian archival materials, After Stalingrad reveals the unbounded ambitions
that shaped the Stavka's winter offensive and the full scope and scale of
the Red Army's many offensive operations. For example, it reflects on
recently rediscovered Operation Mars, Marshal Zhukov's companion-piece to
the more famous Operation Uranus at Stalingrad. It then reexamines the Red
Army's dramatic offensive into the Donbas and Khar'kov region during
February, clearly demonstrating that this offensive was indeed conducted by
three rather than two Red Army fronts. Likewise, it describes how the Stavka
expanded the scale of its offensive in mid-February 1943 by ordering major
strategic efforts, hitherto ignored, by multiple Red Army fronts along the
Western (Orel-Smolensk) axis and, in Zhukov's forgotten operation Polar
Star, along the Northwestern (Demiansk-Leningrad) axis as well. Finally, by
restoring the full scope of these failed or partially failed Red Army
offensives to history, this volume also reassesses the impact of Manstein's
dramatic counterstrokes in the Donbas and Khar'kov regions, concluding that
their impact was equivalent to that of a full-fledged strategic
counteroffensive. This new study includes over 100 operational maps to
highlight key aspects of the offensives.

BISMARCK:
A MINUTE BY MINUTE ACCOUNT OF THE FINAL HOURS OF GERMANY'S GREATEST
BATTLESHIP
Niklas Zetterling & Michael Tamelander, C
A gripping tale of heroism —and doom—on the high seas . . .? The sinking of
the German battleship Bismarck—a masterpiece of engineering, well-armored
with a main artillery of eight 15-inch guns—was one of the most dramatic
events of World War II. She left the port of Gotenhafen for her first
operation on the night of 18 May 1941, yet was almost immediately discovered
by Norwegian resistance and Allied air reconnaissance. British battlecruiser
Hood was quickly dispatched from Scapa Flow to intercept the Bismarck,
together with new battleship Prince of Wales. They were ordered to find the
ship quickly because, on their way from the USA, several large convoys were
heading for Britain. On 24 May, Bismarck was found off the coast of
Greenland, but the ensuing battle was disastrous for the British. The Hood
was totally destroyed within minutes (only 3 crewmen surviving), and Prince
of Wales was badly damaged. The chase resumed until the German behemoth was
finally caught, this time by four British capital ships supported by
torpedo-bombers from the carrier Ark Royal. The icy North Atlantic roiled
from the crash of shellfire and bursting explosions until finally the
Bismarck collapsed, sending nearly 2,000 German sailors to a watery grave.
Tamelander and Zetterling’s work rests on stories from survivors and the
latest historical discoveries. The book starts with a thorough account of
maritime developments from 1871 up to the era of the giant battleship, and
ends with a vivid account, hour by hour, of the dramatic and fateful hunt
for the mighty Bismarck, Nazi-Germany’s last hope to pose a powerful surface
threat to Allied convoys. 8 pages b/w photos, maps

VALKYRIE: GENERAL FRIEDRICH OLBRICHT AND THE PLOT AGAINST HITLER
Helena Schrader, C
On 20 July 1944 the last assassination attempt against Hitler failed.
Leading conspirators behind the attempted coup and thousands of supporters
and sympathisers were arrested and executed. First to fall to the vicious
Nazi retribution was General Friedrich Olbricht, who had nurtured the plans
over three years - codenamed Valkyrie. Olbricht was less glamorous than
Stauffenberg, who laid the bomb in Hitler's bunker, but contributed far more
to the overall resistance against Hitler. Helena Schrader traces Olbricht's
transformation into an active conspirator dedicated to removing Hitler from
power, showing how his plans might have succeeded had Stauffenberg not

TANK BATTLE AT PRAGA JULY - SEPT. 1944: THE 4TH SS PANZER CORPS VS THE 1ST
BELORUSSIAN FRONT
Norbert Bacyk, C,O-
It is a common misunderstanding that the Red Army, on Stalin’s order, halted
outside Warsaw in August 1944 to let the German troops suppress the Polish
uprising in the capital. The fact is that on the last day of July (the night
before the start of the uprising) the Red Army was on its way into Praga
(the east part of Warsaw on the east bank of Vistula) when the German troops
mounted a violent counter attack. This started the bitter fight that came to
be called The Battle for Praga and was to continue until the end of
September when the Red Army finally conquered Praga. By then it was too late
for the Polish resistance inside the city. The fighting was among the
toughest and most brutal on the Eastern Front during the war. 160
photos/illustrations. 58pp colour profiles of tank and military vehicles.

HITLER'S
PREEMPTIVE WAR: THE BATTLE FOR NORWAY 1940
by Henrik O. Lunde, hardcover with dust jacket, new copy.
A thorough examination of one of history’s revolutionary campaigns . .
.After Hitler conquered Poland, and while still fine-tuning his plans
against France, the British began to exert control of the coastline of
neutral Norway, an action that threatened to cut off Germany’s iron-ore
conduit to Sweden and outflank from the start its hegemony on the Continent.
The Germans quickly responded with a dizzying series of assaults, using
every tool of modern warfare developed in the previous generation. Airlifted
infantry, mountain troops and paratroopers were dispatched to the
Scandinavian nation, seizing Norwegian strong points while forestalling
larger but more cumbersome Allied units. The German navy also set sail,
taking a brutal beating at the hands of Britannia, while ensuring with its
sacrifice that key harbors could be held open for resupply. As dive bombers
soared overhead, small but elite German units traversed forbidding terrain
to ambush Allied units trying to forge inland. At Narvik, some 6,000 German
troops battled 20,000 French and British, until the Allies were finally
forced to withdraw by the great disaster in France, which had then get
underway. As a veritable coda to the campaign, the aircraft carrier
Glorious, while trying to sail back to Britain, was hammered under the waves
by the German battle cruiser Scharnhorst. The air, airborne, sea, amphibious,
infantry, armor and commando aspects of this brief but violent campaign are
here covered in meticulous detail. Henrik Lunde, a native Norwegian and
former U.S. Special Operations colonel, has written perhaps the most
objective account to date of a campaign in which 20th century military
innovation found its first fertile playing field. 16 pages illustrations,

THE GATES OF STALINGRAD: SOVIET-GERMAN COMBAT OPERATIONS, APRIL - AUGUST
1942, THE STALINGRA
David Glantz, C
The confrontation between German and Soviet forces at Stalingrad was a
titanic clash of armies on an unprecedented scale—a campaign that was both a
turning point in World War II and a lasting symbol of that war’s power and
devastation. Yet despite the attention lavished on this epic battle by
historians, much about it has been greatly misunderstood or hidden from
view—as David Glantz, the world’s foremost authority on the Red Army in
World War II, now shows. This first volume in Glantz’s masterly trilogy
draws on previously unseen or neglected sources to provide the definitive
account of the opening phase of this iconic Eastern Front campaign. Glantz
has combed daily official records from both sides—including the Red Army
General Staff, the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs, the German
Sixth Army, and the Soviet 62nd Army—to produce a work of unparalleled
detail and fresh interpretations. Jonathan House, an authority on
twentieth-century warfare, adds further insight and context. Hitler’s
original objective was not Stalingrad but the Caucasus oilfields to the
south of the city. So he divided his Army Group South into two parts—one to
secure the city on his flank, one to capture the oilfields. Glantz reveals
for the first time how Stalin, in response, demanded that the Red Army stand
and fight rather than withdraw, leading to the numerous little-known combat
engagements that seriously eroded the Wehrmacht’s strength before it even
reached Stalingrad. He shows that, although advancing German forces
essentially destroyed the armies of the Soviet Southwestern and Southern
Fronts, the Soviets resisted the German advance much more vigorously than
has been thought through constant counterattacks, ultimately halting the
German offensive at the gates of Stalingrad. This fresh, eye-opening account
and the subsequent companion volumes—on the actual battle for the city
itself and the successful Soviet counteroffensive that followed—will
dramatically revise and expand our understanding of what remains a military
campaign for the ages. 80 photographs, 87 maps, 6 x 9

THE SKIES OF FRANCE: A CHRONICLE OF JG2 "RICHTHOFEN", VOLUME ONE 1934 - 1940
Erik Mombeek, C,O,
It has taken more than 60 years for this first detailed history of the
second fighter wing of the Luftwaffe to appear, a chronicle of
Jagdgeschwader 2. Conducting operations principally over France and the
Channel, JG 2 was destined to become one of the most celebrated of German
fighter units, accorded extensive coverage by the propaganda services of the
Reich. Awarded the honour title "Richthofen" as early as 1935, JG 2
spearheaded the campaign in the West and the assault against England in the
Battle of Britain. The unit remained in France when the majority of German
fighter units were dispatched eastwards for the invasion of Russia during
the spring of 1941. Tasked with defending the airspace of Brittany, Normandy
and much of Picardy along the French Channel coastline, JG 2 constituted a
bulwark against the incursions of the RAF and USAF. Despite the unit's heavy
losses sustained during WW II, the authors managed to locate around one
hundred JG 2 veterans and their personal accounts and photographs bring this
history vividly to life and imbue it with a human dimension which many will
find moving. This first volume of the history of JG 2 covers the early years
of the unit from its origins to the turn of the year 1940/1941.

The fourth fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was initially established during
1942 and committed to operations in defence of the Rumanian oil fields
during 1943. I./JG 4 first saw action in combat against a strike force of
B-24 Liberators dispatched on the celebrated low level attack against
Ploesti on 1 August 1943, Operation “Tidal Wave”. JG 4 was subsequently
deployed in the bitterly fought German defensive campaign on the Italian
peninsula during the first half of 1944, prior to being shifted to the
Normandy invasion front and then falling back to the frontiers of the Reich
in September that year. It was during the summer of 1944 that JG 4 underwent
considerable reinforcement with two new Gruppen swelling its ranks. The most
effective of these was II. (Sturm)/JG 4, a so-called “Storm” or "assault"
wing, built up around a hard core of former Sturmstaffel 1 pilots and an
intake of young daredevil volunteers. Committed against the massive USAF
bomber fleets pounding the Reich, these German "kamikaze" fighters, as some
saw them, were deployed to bring down the American bombers by any means,
including ramming if necessary. Despite the appalling losses sustained by JG
4 during WW II, the author managed to locate around one hundred JG 4 and
Sturmstaffel 1 veterans and their personal accounts and photographs bring
this history vividly to life and imbue it with a human dimension which many
will find moving. The first volume of this two part history covers the
unit’s establishment, deployments and combat actions through to Autumn 1944,
providing for the first time in English a day-by-day, mission-by-mission
study of the Luftwaffe’s 4th fighter wing,

THE
ESTONIAN LEGION IN WORDS AND PICTURES
Mart Laar, BOOK IS IN ENGLISH, C,O, Despite my frequent pleas, the
publishers in Estonia used little packing and the books received have
slightly bumped corners. Includes a CD of origina music of the Estonian
Legion.
During its combat career the Estonian Legion carried several names. It was,
in fact, only called a legion for a brief period, then the Waffen-SS 3rd
Estonian Brigade, and later the Waffen-SS 20th Estonian Division, which name
was further adorned with the words Volunteer or Waffen-Grenadier. The
Legion, designated a Brigade, was created in March/April 1943, seeing action
against the Soviets until the end of the year. It was expanded to a division
in January 1944, and saw action in the epic battles at Narva, April through
August 1944. It then withdrew into East Prussia, where it fought as well as
in Silesia, winter/spring 1944/45. It surrendered to the Soviets in May
1945.
The fate of the legionnaires was tough. Many had to pay for their oaths with
their lives, others with incarceration, the labour camp or other
repressions. It was sufficient to drop a hint that somebody had fought "on
the wrong side" in the war to get him fired or to have his studies blocked.
Therefore many tried to hide their pasts in any way possible. Even so, the
occupying Soviet régime did not succeed in breaking the spirit of these men,
and many of them lived to see the 24th February 1989, when the Estonian blue
black and white flag flew again from Long Hermann tower in Tallinn.
The fighting spirit and fighting capacity of the Estonian soldier has been
admired and recognised through time. Not without reason was Alfons Rebane's
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross supplemented with the Oak Leaves in the
last days of the war. Rebane was a talented soldier and military leader who
became legendary during his own lifetime. Fifteen times he succeeded in
bringing his men out of encirclement. After breaking out of the Oppeln
encirclement in March 1945, close to the end of the war, Rebane returned to
bring out the entire German staff , an act in which he succeeded
brilliantly. Worthy of similar recognition are Knight's Cross holders Paul
Maitla, Harald Riipalu and Harald Nugiseks, as well as a number of other
Estonian soldiers who performed heroic deeds in battle.
The present picture album provides an overview of the Estonian Legion's
activities from its creation in 1942 until the end of the war, and of the
legionnaires' fates after the war. The stress has been put on recently
discovered and as yet unpublished photographs and other illustrative
material from various collections. The text is divided into 12 chapters
dealing with the activities of the Legion and its veterans, giving an
overview of the most important events and personalities.

LAST
DAYS OF THE LUFTWAFFE: GERMAN LUFTWAFFE COMBAT UNITS 1944 - 1945
Manfred Griehl, C
The end of the Second World War in Europe was an epoch of complete
social, cultural and technological upheaval. In the realm of military
and aviation history this period was revolutionary. The eclipse of the
piston-engine, and the introduction of electronic detection equipment,
rockets and airborne weapons in previously unknown quantities changed
the face of the air war and paved the way for post-war developments in
aviation technology. Many details of this crucial phase of the war
remained hidden for many years in top-secret files, but in this
fascinating new history Manfred Griehl makes use of recently
declassified sources, alongside his own vast collection of photographs,
to provide a fresh look at the story of the Luftwaffe. Among the many
aspects he covers are the new models of Bf 109 and Fw 190; the Me 262
jet plane; the establishment of He 162 squadrons; Stukas and Fw 190
fighter-bomber operations on the Eastern Front; Me 262 Blitzbombers in
the West, the recruitment of 1928-born Hitler Youth into the two hundred
glider schools; the increasing importance of remote-controlled
air-to-air rockets; and the development of heavy bombs,
remote-controlled bombs, ‘atom bombs’ and Germany's chemical and
bacteriological arsenal. Packed full of fascinating revelations – such
as the existence of the real-life Luftwaffe kamikaze squadron – this
meticulously researched and fully illustrated book will be of interest
to historian and enthusiast alike. More than 180 b/w photos, 20 line
illustrations,

THE
FIRST JET PILOT: THE STORY OF GERMAN TEST PILOT ERICH WARSITZ
Lutz Warsitz, C
On 27 August 1939, Flugkapitan Erich Warsitz became the first man to fly
a jet aircraft, the Heinkel He 178 and in June of the same year he flew
the first liquid-fuel rocket aircraft, the Heinkel He 176. His legendary
flying skills enabled him to assist the pioneering German aircraft and
engine design teams that included Wernher von Braun and Ernst Heinkel.
He repeatedly risked his life extending the frontiers of aviation in
speed, altitude and technology and survived many life-threatening
incidents. This book is written by Erich’s son who has used his father’s
copious notes and log books that explain vividly the then halcyon days
of German aviation history. Warsitz was feted by the Reich’s senior
military figures such as Milch, Udet and Lucht and even Hitler keenly
followed his experimental flying. Little is known of this pioneer period
because of the strict secrecy which shrouded the whole project – it is a
fascinating story that tells of the birth of the jet age and flight as
we know it today. The book includes many unseen photographs and
diagrams. Illustrated throughout,

THE
SKY MY KINGDOM: MEMOIRS OF THE FAMOUS GERMAN WWII TEST PILOT
Hanna Reitsch, C,
The Sky My Kingdom is the fascinating autobiography of the famous World
War test pilot - Hanna Reitsch (March 29, 1912 - August 24, 1979). As
the war progressed, Reitsch was invited to fly many of Germany's latest
(and increasingly desperate) designs, including the rocket-propelled
Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, and several larger bombers on which she
tested various mechanisms for cutting barrage balloon cables. After
crashing on her fifth Me 163 flight, she was badly injured but insisted
on writing her report before falling unconscious and spending five
months in hospital. Eventually she became Adolf Hitler's favorite pilot.
Reitsch was one of only two women awarded the Iron Cross First Class
during World War II, and the only woman awarded the Luftwaffe Combined
Pilot and Observer Badge with Diamonds. She survived many accidents and
was badly injured several times. In the last days of the war Reitsch was
asked to fly her companion, Colonel-General Robert Ritter von Greim,
into Berlin to meet with Hitler. The city was already surrounded by Red
Army troops who had made significant progress into the downtown area
when they arrived on the 27th April, landing on a city street, and
traveled to the Führerbunker. The aircraft she used was the justly
famous Fieseler Storch already well known for the exploit that rescued
Mussolini, only adding to the legend of both Reitsch and that aircraft.
She is said to have overheard Hitler laying out plans for Nazi
commanders to join together in mass suicide when it was obvious that the
war was over. She also hoped to fly out propaganda minister Joseph
Goebbels' six children, who had been staying in the bunker since April
22 with their parents, but neither Joseph nor Magda Goebbels would allow
it. She escaped Berlin on 29th April by flying out through heavy Russian
anti-aircraft fire. She was a devoted and idealistic Nazi, who adored
Adolf Hitler and refused to believe the reports of concentration camps
and torture. Not until much later would she say that she had been
"disgusted" by what she witnessed in the Third Reich. She was held for
18 months by the American military after the war, she was interrogated
and subsequently released. After the war German citizens were forbidden
from flying, except, after a few years, in gliders. In 1952 Reitsch won
third place in the world gliding championship in Spain (and was the only
woman who competed). She continued to break records including the
women's altitude record (6848 meters) and became German champion in
1955.

OF BATTLE: GERMAN KRIEGSMARINE IN WORLD WAR II
Dr Chris McNab, C
Germany’s navy, the Kriegsmarine, played a critical role in the Third
Reich’s attempt to restrict the flow of supplies, men and materiel from
the United States to Britain in the early years of the war and from
North America and Britain to the Soviet Union from 1941. Such was the
success of the U-boats in particular, by the end of the war more than
3000 Allied ships with a combined gross tonnage 14.5 million had been
sent to the bottom of the sea.
Broken down by campaign and key actions, Order of Battle: German
Kriegsmarine in World War II illustrates the strengths and
organizational structures of the Third Reich’s navy, building into a
detailed compendium of information. Full-color order of battle tree
diagrams help the reader quickly understand the make up of U-boat
flotillas and surface fleets. Examples from key moments in the war
include the U-boat wolfpack group West, which harried Allied shipping in
the summer of 1941 and the fleet gathered for the invasion of Denmark in
April 1940. With extensive organizational diagrams, tables and
full-color maps, Order of Battle: German Kriegsmarine in World War II is
an attractive, easy-to-use guide to the German navy of World War II. The
book is an essential reference for any serious enthusiast of naval
warfare in the twentieth century. Illustrated throughtout, photos, maps,

ORDINARY THE WAR EVENTFUL CAREER OF U-604
Christian Prag, C
U-604 may have looked like the hundreds of other Type VIIC U-boats built
by the Nazi Kriegsmarine during World War II, but her six wartime
patrols were far from ordinary. This book draws on the eyewitness
testimony of survivors and the boat's war diary to weave a detailed
tapestry of life and action on U-604 during some of the fiercest convoy
battles of the Atlantic war. She was credited with many successes, among
them inflicting the largest single loss of U.S. mercantile personnel in
one attack. The success of her career, however, pales beside the epic
story of her loss. The boat was damaged beyond repair after repeated
bombing by American aircraft, and her commanding officer organized an
amazing—but tragically unsuccessful—rescue attempt by two other U-boats
in their wolfpack. Many of the book's photos have not been published
previously. 100 photos,

IN THE WINTER WAR 1939 - 1940: Operations: Scandinavia 1939
Maxim Komolyets, C,O
Tanks in the Winter War is a unique book. Certainly there have been
shelves of books written about the Winter War, but none have described
the Soviet units and their efforts, and none have described the tanks
used in the conflict. This book is based upon Russian sources and
therefore stands out remarkably from other books on the market about the
Finnish Winter War. You are given a concise account of the Soviet units,
their equipment and the commanders and operations. You also get an
account of the Finnish defense, the fortifications, the obstacles, the
mines and the armours etc. Furthermore; the only tank battle of the
Winter War, the battle of Honkaniemi, is described in detail. The ‘Tanks

in Finland during World War II and is destined to become a collectors

US
AIRCRAFT IN THE SOVIET UNION AND RUSSIA
Yefim Gordon, C,O,
A new and detailed examination of how imported American aircraft,
engines and aviation equipment were used in pre-revolutionary Russia,
the Soviet Union, and today’s Russia, influencing the development of
aircraft industry, civil and military aviation over all these years.
US aviation first ‘set foot’ on Russian soil in 1908 and since then many
different aircraft have been used. Between the two World Wars, Boeing
and Martin attempted to sell their aircraft to the Soviet Union with
many different variants flying. During the Second World War, Soviet
airmen flew and fought in US aircraft supplied under the Lend-Lease
agreement and these planes proved to be very popular with Soviet
aircrew. After the Cold War, co-operation was established between US and
Russian aircraft manufacturers and research establishments (such as the
effort by Sukhoi and Gulfstream to create supersonic business jets);
deliveries of US aero engines for certain Russian aircraft have also
taken place. This unique book is illustrated with over 600 photographs,
many of which have never been published, line drawings and colour
profiles and will be of real interest to aviation enthusiasts
everywhere. 600 colour and mono illustrations,

TURNING POINT: RECOLLECTIONS OF RUSSIAN PARTICIPANTS AND WITNESSES OF THE
STALINGRAD BATTLE
P.P. Popov, A.V. Kozlov & B.G. Usik, C
Rarely do Westerners gain an understanding of the Russian perspective of the
battle. While a flurry of translated memoirs by senior commanders like Zhukov
and Chuikov in the 1960s and 1970s provided a higher level point-of-view, very
little has been reported in English about how the fighting affected ordinary
Russian soldiers and civilians. Retired Colonel Anatoli Venediktovich Kozlov, a
participant in the battle and section chairman of Volgograd city?s veterans?
council, realised it was imperative to record the accounts of the few remaining
veterans before time inevitably claimed them all. Glasnost has enabled these
veterans to provide a more candid account of their experiences than if they had
been interviewed during the Communist era. Kozlov?s wish was for this book to be
available to Westerners? and now it is.
The book is divided into two distinct parts, each describing a different aspect
of the Stalingrad battle. In Part 1, titled ?On the Southern Approaches to
Stalingrad?, Popov writes about a sector often overshadowed by dramatic events
further north. Long before the Germans approached Stalingrad, tens of thousands
of its citizens were put to work erecting defences around the city and in doing
so endured unbelievable hardship. The southern district of Krasnoarmeysk was
soon struck by the full might of Hoth?s panzer army in August 1942. Popov
explores the district?s preparations, defence and retribution in detail.
In Part 2, ?From Beyond the Don to the Volga?, Kozlov and Usik explore the
better known aspects of the battle by way of rivetting first-hand accounts. It
begins with the battle in the great bend of the Don, an armoured clash in the
hot dusty steppe which resulted in Kozlov losing his entire tank unit. The
fighting then moves into the streets of Stalingrad and we discover how the
brutal struggle was viewed by Red Army soldiers and scores of civilians
remaining in the city. The book concludes with the victorious November
counteroffensive and eventual destruction of Paulus?s 6. Armee in the Stalingrad
pocket.
Russians are proud of their victory at Stalingrad, and justifiably so, but only
by reading the veterans? own words can this source of pride even be begun to be
comprehended. Several photos, maps and aerial photos

The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because prior to the release of the Black Cross/Red Star series, publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. Black Cross/Red Star, presented in several photo-laden volumes, has evolved as the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. Volume 3, has been subtitled Everything for Stalingrad and covers the German summer offensive in 1942; the subsequent fierce air battles over the Caucasus; the Luftwaffe's onslaught on Convoy PQ-17; the hard air war over the Central and Northern combat zones, when the Soviets launched their relief offensives in the summer and fall of 1942; and, mainly, the huge Air Battle over Stalingrad. Similar to Volume 2, Volume 3 will contain a large number of photos and 37 high-quality aircraft color profiles, by one of the best aircraft profile artists in the world--Claes Sundin.

JAGDGESCHWADER 300 "WILDE SAU": A CHRONICLE OF A FIGHTER GESCHWADER IN THE BATTLE FOR GERMANY
VOLUME ONE: JUNE 1943 - SEPTEMBER 1944
VOLUME TWO: SEPTEMBER 1944 - MAY 1945
Jaen-Yves Lorant & Richard Goyat, C,O,
The Wilde Sau Geschwader JG 300 played a key role in the aerial defense of the Reich during the last two years of WWII but has never before been the subject of a serious and detailed study until now. This work thus fills a major void in the history of the war in the air. This chronicle has been assembled with the participation of more than 130 veterans and their families, traced and interviewed in the course of more than twenty years research. It sheds new light on flying operations and aerial combat as experienced by German fighter pilots in the battles that took place over Germany. Interspersed with numerous vivid personal accounts, it is a work that has a uniquely human and personal dimension. The authors have undertaken an in-depth comparative study of German, British and American primary sources and archival records, with the chief aim of minimizing errors and inaccuracies and ruling out dubious information. Far from seeking the 'glorify' German or Allied aviators, they have reconstructed as accurately as possible the fates of the actors in this immense human drama and pay them due tribute. This history of JG 300 also deals with those aspects of the air war often neglected in the specialist literature such as the daily routines of the ground personnel and the navigation methods practiced by single seat fighters. Included are comprehensive loss and victory listings, and more than 800 photographs in the two volumes collected from private sources. Over 40 color profiles and paintings by Thomas A. Tullis and Richard Goyat are planned.

206. GRAF AND GRISLAWSKI: A PAIR OF ACES
Christer Bergstrom, C,O,
Here is the complete story of Graf and Grislawski, two of the most skillful and colorful Luftwaffe fighter pilots during WWII. This book describes teh interwoven fates of these two Luftwaffe fighter aces on the Eastern Front 1941 - 1943 and 1944 - 1945. This book has been written in cooperation with Mr. Alfred Grislawksi, with profile artist Claes Sundin contributing 26 unique profiles of aircraft flown by both aces. There are more than 300 photos, most unpublished. Graf spent many years in Soviet captivity. Much has been said and written about
Graf's alleged cooperation with the Soviets. Here this is analyzed in detail. The authors have access to extensive material from Russian POW archives which includes Hermann Graf's entire POW file that has been hidden in a Russian archive until recovered by the authors. This book is beautifully produced, worth every cent of the price of admission. By the same authors as the acclaimed Black Cross/Red Star series.

Japan was isolated from foreign influence for thousand years, with
hardly any influence from the outside world, during which it developed a
very particular culture different form the West. It became involved in

MERKUR: THE CONQUEST OF CRETE, 1941
WARS AND BATTLES SERIES, Jose Antonio, S
Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in
1941, was unprecedented in three respects; it is considered to be the
first airborne operation in history; it was the first time the Allies
made significant use of intelligence from the deciphered German Enigma
codes; and it was the first time German troops encountered mass
resistance from a civilian population. Beginning on 20 May, German
forces landed near the island's airports, took over the runways, and
with numerous reinforcements landing over the forthcoming days, Crete
surrendered within a week. Yet it was not without cost. German losses
were horrific, with casualties over a third of all men employed. Crete
was the first of its kind and many learned from its mistakes as well as
its successes, with even Hitler so shocked by the number of men lost
that he never again authorized this level of airborne operation. The
Conquest of Crete, 1941 describes the eleven days in combat in full
detail, including accounts of Cretan civilians—armed with only what they
could gather from their houses—overcoming the German troops all over the
island. Supported by color artworks of the men involved and their
machines, along with photographs and battle maps, this is a complete
account of one of World War II's most devastating operations. 175

GLADIUS: A STUDY OF THE M9 MULTI PURCHASE BAYONET SYSTEM
Mack Pattarozzi, C.
The M9 has been the United States Army’s standard bayonet for over two
decades – with no plans in sight to replace it. In fact, it is already
the longest serving American bayonet, joining the M-16 as an enduring
symbol of the American soldier. Without exaggeration, it has become an
icon of the American Army in much the same way as the Gladius became
symbolic of the Roman Legions. This book chiefly focuses on the M9, its
manufacturers, evolution, variations, accessories, and collectability
with the objective to spotlight only those M9s of military issue. Beyond
that, the intention is to provide fellow collectors with a reference and
a tool that will enhance their collecting experience through objective
data as well as personal knowledge and experience. There is no other
bayonet in all of American military history which possesses such a one
of a kind individualism while at the same time displaying so obvious an
American personality of design as the M9! over 190 color/bw images,

AND MISSILES OF WHITE SANDS PROVING GROUNDS 1945 - 1958
Gregory Kennedy, C,O,
In 1945, the United States Army established a testing center for rockets
and guided missiles in south-central New Mexico. Named White Sands
Proving Ground, this center was the locale for many of America s first
steps towards space. Rockets and Missiles of White Sands Proving Ground
chronicles major activities at the base from 1945-1958. During this
period, the Army, Navy, and Air Force all tested missiles at the desert
installation. This book details the development and testing for such
missiles as Hermes, Corporal, Nike Ajax, Sergeant, Honest John, and
Viking. These missiles formed the backbone of much of America s arsenal
during the Cold War and represented major technological advancements. In
1958, the White Sands Proving Ground became the White Sands Missile
Range, as it is known today. Illustrated throughout, but I wouldn't

THE
BATTLE OF THE BULGE: OPERATIONS OF THE 3RD FALLSCHIRMJAGER DIVISIONl:
DEFENCE OF THE NORTH SECTOR BETWEEN DECEMBER 1944 AND JANUARY 1945
compiled by Hans Wijers, S,O,
This book describes the action in the area southeast of Malmédy, the
area controlled during the later part of the Battle of the Bulge by
elements of the German 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division between Christmas
1944 and the end of January 1945. This book gives a detailed overview of
what happened after the German opening attack came to a standstill, and
where the German 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division, after initial success,
was trying to stop the American counterattack that started in late
January. The US units that had been in action since the opening days of
the battle, and facing a enemy determined to hold its positions, were
thrown back into battle to push the Germans back to where they started
the offensive. Likewise, the German troops, exhausted from fighting
since the first day of the battle, without proper food or clothing and
receiving relatively no replacements of equipment or men lost during the
heavy fighting, were facing an enemy similarly determined to push them
back.

CONCORD
7030 GERMAN STRUMARTILLERIE AT WAR VOL. 2
By Frank De Sisto, S,O,
The first volume of German Sturmartillerie appeared some time ago, but
the second volume in the two-part series is now hot off the press.
Sturmartillerie was an important branch in the German armed forces, and
it evolved as WWII wore on. German forces found themselves engaged in
more protracted battles, often in urban areas. This led to the need for
more heavily armored vehicles and more powerful weapons. This resulted
in new vehicles (though based on existing designs) like the StuG III
Ausf. G, StuG IV, s.IG33 and Sturmtiger.
Frank De Sisto's book offers a veritable potpourri of black and white
photos that show Sturmartillerie to best effect. The coverage begins
with Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of Russia, and continues
right up to the end of the war. Vehicles in different theaters such as
the Eastern Front, Northwest Europe and the Mediterranean are all shown.
Readers will be pleased with the wide selection of photos, many of which
are new. Coverage naturally concentrates on the more numerically common
StuG III (a wide range of variants), but the Sturminfanteriegeschütz 33,
StuG IV, Sturmpanzer IV and Sturmtiger also make cameo appearances. The
book begins with a concise summary of some of the new Srurmartillerie
vehicle designs that were introduced as the war progressed.
The centerpiece of this book is a set of 16 color plates produced by
Laurent Lecocq, these showing various camouflage schemes and tactical
markings. This second book on the popular topic of Sturmartillerie is a
treasure trove of information for the historically minded, plus a source
of inspiration for model makers.

PANZERS
IN NORMANDY: GENERAL HANS EBERBACH AND THE GERMAN DEFENSE OF FRANCE JULY
- AUGUST 1944
Samuel Mitcham, S,
In July 1944, after fighting in most of Germany's campaigns--Poland,
France in 1940, the Eastern Front--and then serving as Heinz Guderian's
troubleshooter, General of Panzer Troops Hans Eberbach took command of
Panzer Group West near the vital city of Caen in the British sector of
Normandy. During the next two months, Eberbach led German tanks against
the Allied onslaught in an ultimately vain attempt to stop the
breakthrough into France's interior. Captured by the British at the end
of August, Eberbach nevertheless secured himself a place among Germany's
best panzer leaders.

Caught by surprise in 1941, the Red Army teetered on the brink of

Stalingrad and Kursk, and annihilate the German Army in 1944-45. This is
the story of how the Soviets staged this miraculous turnaround.

OF BATTLE: GERMAN LUFTWAFFE IN WORLD WAR II
Dr Chris McNab, C, O-
Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe, played a critical role in the Third
Reich’s victories in the early part of World War II, providing the
airborne component of the German forces’ irresistible Blitzkrieg
(“lightning war”) tactics that swept all armies before it from 1939 to
1942. Broken down by campaign and key battles within each theater of
war, Order of Battle: German Luftwaffe in World War II illustrates the
strengths and organizational structures of the Third Reich’s air force,
building into a detailed compendium of information. Full-color order of
battle tree diagrams at Luftflotten, Gruppe, Fliegerkorps and squadron
level help the reader quickly understand how and where bomber (Kampfgeschwader),
fighter (Jagdgeschwader), dive-bomber (Stukageschwader), and
reconnaissance (Aufklärungsgruppe) units were employed. Quick reference
tables provide unit strengths, aircraft types, and base locations, while
profile diagrams show typical numbers of aircraft at squadron level.
With extensive organizational diagrams, tables and full-color campaign
maps, Order of Battle: German Luftwaffe in World War II is an
attractive, easy-to-use guide to the German air force of World War II.
The book is an essential reference for any serious enthusiast of air
warfare in the twentieth century.

KESSELRING'S
LAST BATTLE: WAR CRIMES TRIALS AND COLD WAR POLITICS, 1945 - 1960
Kerstin Von Lingen, C,
In 1947 German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring was tried and convicted
of war crimes committed during World War II. He was held responsible for
his troops having executed nearly 9,000 Italian citizens—women,
children, elderly men—in retaliation for partisan attacks. His
conviction, however, created a real dilemma for the United States and
western Europe. While some sought the harshest punishments available for
anyone who had participated in the war crimes of the Nazi regime, others
believed that the repatriation of alleged war criminals would help
secure the allegiance of a rearmed West Germany in the dangerous new
Cold War against the Soviet Union. Kerstin von Lingen’s close analysis
of the Kesselring case reveals for the first time how a network of
veterans, lawyers, and German sympathizers in Britain and America
achieved the commutation of Kesselring’s death sentence and his eventual
release—reinforcing German popular conceptions that he had been innocent
all along and that the Wehrmacht had fought a “clean war” in Italy. But
von Lingen shows that Kesselring bore much greater guilt for civilian
deaths than had been proven in court—and that the war on the southern
front had been far from clean. Von Lingen weaves together strands of the
story as diverse as Winston Churchill’s ability to mobilize support
among British elites, Basil Liddell Hart’s need to be recognized as an
important military thinker, and the Cold War fears of the “Senators’
Circle” in the United States. Through this rich narrative, she shows how
international politics shaped the trial’s proceedings and outcome—as
well as the memory and meaning of the war for German citizens—and sheds
new light on the complex interplay between the combatants’ efforts to
“master the past” and the threatening state of international relations
in the early Cold War. In analyzing the efforts to clear Kesselring’s
name, von Lingen shows that the case was about much more than the fate
of one convicted individual; it also underscored the pressure to wrap up
the war crimes issue—and German guilt—in order to get on with the
business of bringing a rearmed Germany into the Western alliance.
Kesselring’s Last Battle sheds new light on the “politics of memory” by
unraveling a twisted thread in postwar history as it shows how
historical truth is sometimes sacrificed on the altar of expediency.

COUNTDOWN
TO VALKYRIE: THE JULY PLOT TO ASSASSINATE HITLER
Nigel Jones, C,
Although there were more than 40 plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler, none
came closer to success than the July Plot of 1944. The attempt was
masterminded by Count von Stauffenberg, a member of the German General
Staff, who had been rushed back from Africa after losing his left eye
and right hand. For his injuries, he had been decorated as a war hero.
Never a supporter of Nazi ideology, he was increasingly attracted by the
approaches of the German resistance movement. After a attempt to
assassinate Hitler in November 1943 failed, Stauffenberg developed a new
plot to kill him at the Wolf's Lair Headquarters on 20th July 1944.
Besides the Fuhrer's assassination, Stauffenberg organized plans to take
over command of the Germany forces and sue for peace with the Allies.
The attempt ultimately failed. Only one bomb was detonated and Hitler
was only injured: his life was probably saved because the bomb, hidden
in Stauffenberg's suitcase, had been placed behind a heavy table leg
which reduced the impact of the black. In remarkable detail, with
photographs, explanatory maps and diagrams, author Nigel Jones dissects
the lead up to the attempt, the events of the day in minute-by-minute
detail, and the aftermath in which the conspirators were hunted down. No
other work on the July Plot contains such accessible detail and full
explanation of this attempt on Hitler's life. In addition to a forensic
analysis of the day, the book includes short biographies of the key
characters involved, the first-person recollections of witnesses, and a
'what if' section explaining the likely outcome of a successful
assassination. illustrated throughout.

Ju 287: GERMANY'S FORWARD SWEPT WING BOMBER
Steven Ransom, C,O,
The extraordinary Junkers Ju 287, the first truly swept-winged,
jet-powered aircraft, took to the sky in August 1944, at a time when
Germany was suffering sustained round-the-clock bombing by the Allied
air forces. Despite such adverse development conditions, this large and
futuristic aircraft represented a remarkable accomplishment in
aeronautical design. It featured a revolutionary swept forward wing and
was built largely from scavenged components from other aircraft. The
project was considered ‘top secret’ and evaded Allied intelligence for
many months. This book is illustrated throughout by many photographs,
several previously unpublished, and contains much new and revised
information on the Ju 287 and it will be the definitive account of this
remarkable aircraft. The authors also trace the development of forward
swept-winged aircraft prior to its appearance and the aircraft’s
subsequent history in the Soviet Union and its post-war influence on
aircraft projects and designs produced in Germany. A unique and
compelling account for all aviation enthusiasts. 130 colour and mono

SS FREIWILLIGEN-PANZER-GRENADIER-DIVISION "NORDLAND"
Rolf Michaelis, C
Several thousand ethnic Germans in Romania, (the so called
Volksdeutscher) were drafted into the Waffen-SS in 1943. With these new
troops Himmler built up the new 11th Waffen-SS Division. To fill the
ranks Division “Nordland” also took over battalion strength units from
Danmark and Norway, though ninety percent of the division were
Volksdeutsche from Romania. They were first used in combat in Croatia,
the Oranienbaumer, Estonia, and Latvia. After the Soviet attack in
Pomerania they fought in Berlin and were destroyed there. over 80 bw

THE
SS TOTENKOPF RING AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY FROM MUNICH TO NUREMBERG
Craig Gottlieb, C
Using modern tools not available to previous authors on this subject,
Craig Gottlieb paints a comprehensive picture of the Totenkopf Ring and
the man who was behind it – Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. Gottlieb
draws on a body of over 200 examples to document currently believed
notions about the ring. He offers never before seen photos and
documents, and even develops many new well-reasoned theories about the
Totenkopf (Death Head) ring. The book also covers the pre-history of the
Totenkopf ring, placing its appearance onto the “SS Scene” in historical
context. Also covered are design background, construction techniques,
and an in-depth analysis of the physical characteristics of rings.
Gottlieb also includes sections on award documents and frames, ring
shipping boxes, and provides many never-before-seen photographs of rings
in wear. Finally, he brings rings to life with an extensive “personality
profile” chapter in which he illustrates several famous rings. over 200

WOODBURNERS: GAS PRODUCER VEHICLES IN WWII AN OVERVIEW
John Ryan, C,O,
In this age of high fuel prices and concern with continuing availability
of oil, scientists are working on a number of approaches to alternate
fuel sources. These concerns may provoke interest in how some people in
gas-starved Europe dealt with such problems throughout the war years,
1939-1945. One of the most successful innovations, were the so-called
“gas producer” vehicles that utilized the by-products of solid fuel
combustion, employing such solids as coal, charcoal, turf, and wood to
produce fuel gas for a standard internal combustion engine. This book
provides an overview of such vehicles, including those used by the
Wehrmacht. Schematics of operating systems and the regulations
concerning their use are also included, along with a translated German
illustrated operators manual. over 120 bw images

HERMANN
GORING PANZER DIVISION IN SICILY (Campaign Series)
Claude Gillono, S,O
The book begins with three pages which give the order of battle of HG PD
prior to the Allied landings on 10th of july 1943. This also mentions
the Italian units which were present but are only mentioned in passing.
However, the book is about the German forces and with a couple of
tables, covers in this brief introduction AFV strength, Incurred losses
and a page detailing the composition of the Hermann Göring PD. The
majority of the book covers (German-sourced) images of the Division in
Sicily. Many of these photos were taken by personnel of an attached
Propaganda Company - others are archive images from the Imperial War
Museum's collection. The photos are used correctly - two (occasionally
1) image per page which allows a good sized photo along with details of
the vehicle, background or the troops in the image. Each photo is
captioned in some detail listing unit, date (when available) and
location (when known). There are a total of 49 black and white photos in
the book. The diversity of the vehicles used by HG also seems to be
well-reflected. Although there are a lot of images of StuG's, there are
also lesser-photographed subjects such as the Bison SPG on the 38 (t)
chassis, some Beute-Panzers such as captured Marmon-Herrington Armored
Cars or a captured Sherman III.. There aren't that many images of the 17
Tiger I's which were on strength at the beginning - those of the famous
(and much-modeled) 2/schwere Panzer Abteilung 504, those which are
there, are British images of a captured example. Another bonus, due to
the nature of the division, are the many images of German Paras. In the
center of the book are the color plates which were done by Dennis
Oliver. These are superbly done and cover PZ III's (Ausf. M), IV's (Ausf.
G) StuH 42, StuG II (Ausf F), with the final of these four pages
dedicated to the Tiger I's. Although the color plates only take up 4
pages, the attention to detail is excellent - all relevant company
markings are given separate coverage along with placement details of
markings. A detailed graphical explanation of Unit Insignia is included
on the inside back cover.

PARATROOPS IN SCANDINAVIA: FALLSCHIRMJAGER IN DENMARK AND NORWAY APRIL -
JUNE 1940
Oscar Gonzalez, C,
The German conquest of Denmark and Norway in spring 1940 presents an
interesting study of joint strategy between ground, air, and sea forces.
In this campaign, the Germans placed great emphasis on mobility, speed,
and surprise. The Fallschirmjäger of 1940 was a well-trained,
highly-motivated force, and their participation in Operation
“Weserübung” – the codename for the Wehrmacht assault on Denmark and
Norway – is this subject of this book. Among the topics discussed are
German paratroop operations (some of the first combat jumps of the war)
against the main Danish and Norwegian bridges and aerodromes, the jump
on Dombås, behind enemy lines, and also their tenacious resistance on
the snow-covered grounds of Narvik. over 160 color/bw images,

The LWS, or Land-Wasser-Schlepper (land-water tractor) is one of the
least known German WW2 combat vehicles. Following several years of
service, the worlds first amphibious tractor evolved into an improved
and lightly armoured variant, of which two prototypes were built.
Eventually both ended up in Russia. After WW2 they were used in the
development of similar vehicles for the Soviet Armed Forces. The US Army

LIVES OF HITLER'S JEWISH SOLDIERS: UNTOLD TALES OF MEN OF JEWISH DESCENT
WHO FOUGHT FOR THE THIRD REICH
Bryan Rigg, C,
They were foot soldiers and officers. They served in the regular army
and the Waffen-SS. And, remarkably, they were also Jewish, at least as
defined by Hitler’s infamous race laws. Pursuing the thread he first
unraveled in Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers, Bryan Rigg takes a closer look at
the experiences of Wehrmacht soldiers who were classified as Jewish. In
this long-awaited companion volume, he presents interviews with
twenty-one of these men, whose stories are both fascinating and
disturbing. Rigg relates each individual’s experiences following the
establishment of Hitler’s race laws, shifting between vivid scenes of
combat and the increasingly threatening situation on the home front for
these men and their family members. Their stories reveal the constant
tension in their lives: how some tried to hide their identities, and how
a few were even “Aryanized” as part of Hitler’s effort to retain
reliable soldiers—including Field Marshal Erhard Milch, three-star
general Helmut Wilberg, and naval commander Bernhard Rogge. Chilling,
compelling, almost beyond belief, these stories depict crises of
conscience under the most stressful circumstances. Lives of Hitler’s
Jewish Soldiers deepens our understanding of the complex intersection of
Nazi race laws and German military service both before and during World
War II. 64 photographs

THE
SNIPER - SIMO HAYHA: ONE SHOT ONE KILL
Tapio A. M. Saarelainen, C
Simo Häyhä (1905 – 2002) is the most famous sniper in the world. He is a
sniper with a capital S. During the Winter War, which was fought between
Finland and Soviet Union in 1939 – 1940, he obediently carried out the
demanding tasks he was commanded to. He was one of the significant
persons who created the Spirit of the Winter War by leading the way. He
has been a role model for snipers all over the world and paved the way
for them by showing their significance in the battlefield. He still
holds the record of the snipers, 542 confirmed kills, with iron sights.
Simo Häyhä was a man of action who spoke very little. He was rewarded
for his actions in many ways during and after the Winter War, the only
war he ever participated in. He was promoted from corporal to second
lieutenant and he was awarded the Cross of Kollaa (Kollaan Risti). He
was also rewarded a Honorary Rifle, Sako m/28 on February 17 1940 at
Kollaa front. For sniping Simo Häyhä used his own m/28-30 rifle the
whole time. Simo was wounded on March 6 1940. Simo Häyhä lived two
lives: The first one before the Winter War and the second one after his
recovery. Simo got back on his feet and created long lasting career in
farming and forestry. His roots were deep in the Finnish soil and he
loved the life in rural Finland. He was also a master in breeding
hunting dogs and he knew how to hunt small game and moose. He shot 73
moose, last one in 1984. Tapio Saarelainen, the author of this book, is
a career officer in the Finnish Army. He has spent two decades in
training snipers. In his youth he competed in rifle shooting. The author
has spent lots of time investigating Simo Häyhä’s life and
accomplishments and he interviewed Simo dozens of times during 1997 –
2002. The author has also participated in writing the Sniper’s Manual
for the Finnish Defence Forces in 2000 – 2003. He has transferred Simo
Häyhä’s trade secrets to the mentioned manual through this writing
process. Waging war is the essential part of humanity. This has not
changed, although the form of waging war and the methods have. War is
getting more technical, but the nature of sniping remains the same.
There is always a sniper with the duty to carry out the commanded task.
One shot – one kill is the goal, also in the future!

This is a book about 20 mm weapons and ammunition used by the Finnish
Army, Navy and Air Force prior to 1945. The book contains information
about anti-tank rifles, anti-aircraft cannons and aircraft cannons, all
20 mm calibre. As with other weapons used by the Finnish military during

types was wide. Besides the 20 mm calibre, development of 13.2 mm
weapons and ammunition in the late 1930s is also covered. Although the

FINNISH MILITARY CARTRIDGES 1918 - 1945
Authors: Mika Pitkänen and Timo Simpanen, C, chapter summaries in
English, english captions.
To date, there has been almost no literature available concerning the
small arms ammunition used by Finland except some ammunition manuals
published by the Finnish Defense Forces. Furthermore, only a few books
dealing with the history of the Finland's domestic ammunition industry
exists. "Finnish Military Cartridges 1918-1945", was written to fill
these gaps in Finnish military history. In addition to a serving as
guide for identifying the cartridges used by the Finns, it offers
historical information on the wide range of ammunition used, including
domestic manufacture and the acquisition of ammunition from abroad. The
book contains all of the centerfire military small arms ammunition -
excluding those of 20 mm and larger caliber - used by the Finnish Army,
Navy and Air Force prior to 1945. While the text is in Finnish, there
are short English summaries after each chapter, and all photographs and
drawings have both Finnish and English captions.

ANGRIFF: THE
GERMAN ATTACK ON STALINGRAD IN PHOTOS
Jason D. Mark, C,O,
Too often the visual aspect of the Stalingrad battle is portrayed using
the same well-known images, and while most are no doubt stunning, their
repeated use - with incorrect or misleading captions - adds nothing new
to the record. Angriff:The German Attack on Stalingrad in Photos aims to
rectify that. A rich cache of spectacular images is spread throughout
collections across the globe. The photos used in this book have been
gathered from a multitude of sources: military archives, photo
libraries, museums, but most of all from private collections. The
content of photos from these collections often portray the battle from
the perspective of an individual soldier. Some of these photos certainly
depict the stark reality of war but not every soldier saw action on the
front-line. When all these private photos are combined, however, they
form a montage and provide an insight into the lives of 6. Armee's
soldiers. Furthermore, they often show periods of the battle that never
fell within the viewfinder of a professional photographer. Every photo -
including each famous image - has been painstakingly researched so that
it is paired with a meaningful and accurate caption. In most cases, the
location of the photo has been pinpointed, as has the date and unit
depicted. This has enabled it to be placed in its correct historical,
chronological and geographical context. While this process has cast a
light on previously vague aspects of the battle, it has also debunked
captions to many familiar images. If you want to see what Stalingrad was
like from the German perspective, this book is for you. 700 photos
