97. MILITARY TRAINING IN THE BRITISH ARMY, 1940-1944: FROM DUNKIRK TO D-DAY,
Tim Harrison-Place, C,

in this penetrating study, the author traces the
reasons for the Army's tactical weaknesses in Normandy to flaws in its
training in Britiain. The armour suffered from failure fully to disseminate
the lessons of experience in the Mediterranean theatres to troops training at
home. The infantry meanwhile, failed to apply lessons that had been learned
on the Western Fron a generation before. They trained according tu the habits
of 1916 and, despite the efforts of some among their number, the British Army
never fully retrieved that error. Oblivious to the truth that tactically it
was nearly always one step behind the enemy, this was an Army cruelly let
down by poor direction from the top,

154. FRENCH ARMS: ARMED FORCES HANDBOOK,
Ronald Tarnstrom, C,

supported by extensive orders of battle and hundreds of small drawings illustrating nearly
all weapons used, or proposed, by each branch of service, the narrative
integrates the civil events that propel the military with the combined
operations of army, navy and air forces in prosecuting each campaign. French
Arms is a study of the evolution of French military organization, weapons,
and tactics from the ancient Celts to the current armed forces, including
Charlemagne's innovations, the Crusaders parry Saracen tactics, tactical
revolution of the Great Italian Wars and the Wars of Religion, the armies of
the Great Kings, the great naval wars of the Eighteenth Century, the
campaigns of Napoleon, and Franco-Austrian, Franco-Prussian and
Franco-Chinese Wars. But of course the largest sections deals with both World
Wars. WWI is studied in detail, many new tactical methods being developed but
persisted in too long against the overwhelming firepower of artillery and
machine-guns. The generals found the answer near the end of the war. The
tank was only part of it. All of the tactics of WWII were germinated in WWI.
From the brief campaign of 1940, particular attention is given to the armored
operations by the various types of tank units employed. The world's first
major tank battles in Belgium and northern France are discussed in detail.
Then follows full accounts of the Vichy armed forces, Free French forces,
and the postwar actions in Algeria, Indo-China, the Suez Canal and Desert
Storm. The small armies of Luxembourg and Monaco of WWII conclude the book.
A huge massive study,

155. VICTORY AT MORTAIN: STOPPING HITLER'S PANZER COUNTEROFFENSIVE
Mark Reardon, C

outstanding and extremely well researched study on Germany's powerful counterattack in Normandy in August 1944 against a single American infantry division near the town of Mortain, attempting to drive the Allies back to the sea. Through vigorous prose laced with compelling anecdotes, Reardon reconstructs the battle from both sides of the firing line to explain why it evolved and ended up as it did. He reveals how professional rivalries and lack of accurate battlefield information hampered the efforts of German generals to execute a successful counteroffensive. He also tells how the U.S. Army profited from the bitter lessons of hedgerow fighting to gain superiority in ground maneuver, fire support, and the use of airpower, logistics, communications, and reconnaissance in the face of more experienced and better armed opponents. This book fills an important gap in the history of the Normandy campaigns.

Participants range from division command personnel to regimental, company and battery commanders; from chaplains, surgeons and enlisted medics to platoon sergeants, squad leaders and the rough, tough troopers who adapted quickly to fighting in mixed, unfamiliar groups after a badly scattered drop - and yet managed to gain the objectives set for them in the hedgerow country of Normandy.

183. HALF TRACK: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN SEMI-TRACKED VEHICLES
R. P. Hunnicutt, C,O

The armored half-track was one of the few vehicles available to equip the
new divisions being formed just prior to World War II. A product of a prewar
development program, the first production vehicles were delivered in May
1941.
Part I traces the early development beginning with the slow half-track of
World War I to the faster vehicles developed after the evaluation of the
French Citroen-Kegresse P17 in 1931. These vehicles were unarmored
half-track cars and trucks intended for use as prime movers and
reconnaissance vehicles.
In 1938, the half-track suspension was installed on the M2A1 scout car and
the converted vehicle became the half-track personnel carrier T7. This was
the first armored half-track, but tests showed that it was underpowered.
Based upon the experience with the T7, a new vehicle was designed in 1939
and designated as the half-track scout car T14. Using the half-track
suspension from the T7 and a more powerful engine, it became the prototype
for all of the half-tracks produced during World War II.
In Part II, the development and production of half-tracks during World War
II is described showing the many roles for which it was adapted. In addition
to the original armored scout car, the basic chassis was adapted as a
personnel carrier, mortar carrier, tank destroyer, self-propelled artillery,
and other specialized applications. Some of these vehicles were temporary
expedients, but others were so successful that they remained in use until
long after World War II.
Part III briefly describes some half-track operations during World War II
and Korea. However, it is not intended to be an operational history, but to
illustrate the effectiveness of the half-track in active service. The
characteristics of the various half-track vehicles and the weapons with
which some of them were armed are tabulated in the data sheets in Part IV.

VOLUME 5: ARDENNES: THE SECRET WAR

The general outline of the Battle of the Bulge, or "Ardennes Offensive" as it is more commonly known in Europe, is well-known and has become a great military legend. However, as veteran World War II author Charles Whiting reveals here, the magnitude of the German surprise has been downplayed in the West and the extent of German deception and sabotage operations minimized.
Charles Whiting traces German operations through the eyes of three key officers, all of whom he interviewed after the war: Hermann Giskes, a German Army counterintelligence officer who had broken the Allied spy network in Holland and set up his own force of spies and saboteurs; Freiherr (Baron) von der Heydte, an aristocratic paratroop officer assigned to make a last desperate jump behind Allied lines; and Otto Skorzeny, an SS commando leader assigned to deploy agents in American uniforms behind Allied lines during the upcoming offensive. These three officers were key members of a German "secret war" that was more extensive and came closer to success than many previous accounts have suggested.

193. PATTON'S AIR FORCE: FORGING A LEGENDARY AIR-GROUND TEAM
David Spires, C,

this book is a case study of one air-ground team's experience of tactical air power employed during the climactic WWII campaigns against he forces of Germany. From the time Patton's Third Army became operational on August 1, 1944 until the end of the war, Patton's troops covered more ground and took more enemy prisoners than any other Allied army in northwest Europe. Brig. Gen. Otto Weyland's XIX Tactical Air Command provided air support every step of the way. Their combined success is something of an anomaly; air-ground relationships are notoriously confrontational and plagued with interservice competition. How did Patton and Weyland work together to achieve such astounding success is the core of this book. Spires finds that this success was due to four key developments; the maturation of tactical aviation doctrine, effective organizational procedures, a technical revolution in equipment, and, above all, the presence of pragmatic men of goodwill who made the system work. This collaboration extended all the way down the chain of command. A brilliant study that is illustrated and features many three color maps.

OPERATION HEARTBREAK
Duff Cooper, C

This book provides the full history of the extraordinary story of the elaborate and successful plan to deceive the Germans into the double bluff of believing the Allied invasion of Sicily would, in reality, take place in Greece. The audacious and innovative plot called for a dead body, dressed as a Royal Marine officer and presumably killed in an airplane crash to wash ashore on the coast of Spain, and conceal the false information about a pending invasion of Greece. Montagu, the mastermind behind the scheme was pressured to write the factual account of this operation when the authorities learned that Duff Cooper was to publish the fictional story of the incident. Anthony Williams, S,O,

This book is essential reading for all those with an interest in the technical aspects of military, naval and aviation history. It is a comprehensive account of the development and use of heavy machine guns, automatic cannon and their ammunition. It covers the heavy automatic weapons (12.7-57 mm plus a few others) developed in every nation throughout the 20th century, whether used by armies, navies, or air forces. Contains tabulated data for the weapons and ammunition as well as a cartridge identification guide. The author also gives an understanding of the factors which have influenced both the designers of the weapons and the military procurement authorities which acquired them. The emphasis is very much on weapons which saw service, but some important experimental types, and some recent developments which have yet to be adopted are included. Also explores a range of related issues such as developments in gunsights and fire control and their effect on the accuracy of aircraft and AA fire. The problems experienced in mounting heavy guns in aircraft, and the effectiveness of the armament choices made by warring powers, are covered in detail. There is also an appendix on anti-tank rifles which gives comprehensive coverage of these weapons, their ammunition and their usefulness, together with information about modern heavy rifles. 237. UNLESS VICTORY COMES: HELL ON THE GROUND FROM THE WEST WALL TO VICTORY
Gene Garrison, C,

Gene Garrison spent a terrifying nineteenth birthday crammed into a muddy foxhole near the German border in the Saar. He listened helplessly to cries of wounded comrades as exploding artillery shells sent deadly shrapnel raining down on them. The date was December 16, 1944, he was an assistant gunner in a .30-caliber machine-gun crew with the 87th Infantry Division and this was his first day in combat. From those first frightening, confusing days in combat until the end of the war five months later, Gene Garrison saw many of his buddies killed or wounded, each loss reducing his own odds of survival. Convinced before one attack that his luck had deserted him, he wrote a final letter to his family, telling them goodbye. Garrison gave the letter to a buddy with instructions to mail it if he died. From the bitter fighting west of Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge to the end of the war on the Czechoslovakian border, Garrison describes the degradation of war with pathos and humor. Gene Garrison's story is told through the eyes of the common soldier, a man who might not know the name of the town or the location of the next hill that he and his comrades must grimly wrestle from the enemy but who is willing to die in order to carry the war forward to the hated enemy.

238. THE NORTH ATLANTIC FRONT: THE NORTHERN ISLES AT WAR
James Miller, C,O,

During the two world wars, the chain of island groups - Orkney, Shetland, the Faroes and Iceland - linking Europe to North America, acquired great strategic significance. Operating from its main base at Scapa Flow, the Royal Navy and its allies sought to contain the German naval threat within the North Sea and protect the northern flank of maritime operations in the North Atlantic. This book tells the story of operations along this northern front in a sequel to the author's earlier account of Scapa Flow, operations that had to contend with fierce weather as well as a determined and capable enemy. Illustrated with over a hundred archive photographs, this is a fascinating glimpse into a theater of war overlooked by other naval history books.

244. MILITARY OPERATIONS OF THE DUTCH ARMY 10TH - 17TH MAY 1940
P.L.G. Doorman, C

Most studies of the 1940 Western Campaign have tended to focus on a narrow range of topics, principally those relating the German forces or the epic of Dunkirk. The publication of this title is aimed at redressing the balance by providing a detailed account of the operations of the Dutch army during this campaign. The author begins by presenting a detailed account of the Dutch army prior to the campaign, including its plan of campaign. He also includes a fascinating chapter discussing the geography of the Netherlands from a military point of view. The remainder of the text consists of a daily account of the Dutch army's operations down to regimental or independent battalion-level. In doing so, the author clearly demonstrates the combat capability of the Dutch troops and the brave and tenacious defence with which they met the German invasion. Appendices provide a detailed order-of-battle, and sample orders. This is a significant contribution to the literature available on the 1940 campaign in France and the Low Countries. June Release.

246. DEVILS AND EAGLES IN NORMANDY 1944: AMERICAN, BRITISH AND CANADIAN AIRBORNE FORCES IN NORMANDY
Carl Shilleto, C,

This book offers a fresh perspective on the contribution made by American, British and Canadian airborne forces during the opening phase of the Normandy campaign during 1944 - for the first time, Commonwealth and American airborne combat effectiveness is considered within the context of the greatest combined operation of WWII. A comprehensive breakdown of the American, British and often forgotten Canadian airborne assault forces, their designated drop-zones, D-Day objectives, UK departure areas and supporting air forces. The importance of the complexity of airborne operations is put into context against the backdrop of the D-Day invasion of 6 June 1944 including diversionary and SAS operations. The use of eyewitness accounts, interwoven with a detailed study of how the paratroopers and glider-borne soldiers actually achieved their D-Day objectives, is presented in an exciting and compelling narrative that will suit both general readers and historians alike. The author considers and assesses the effectiveness of the three-national airborne assault and reveals the success and failings of American and Commonwealth airborne assault in Normandy. Detailed appendices provide a comprehensive listing of Orders of Battle, key personalities, casualties, recommended tours of battlefields, places of interest to visit, organisations and an up-to-date bibliography of airborne forces in Normandy literature.

247. THE FIELD MARSHAL'S REVENGE: THE BREAKDOWN OF A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
Charles Whiting, C,

An incisive exploration of the 'special relationship' between Britain and the United States told from the perspective of the volatile, often fraught, alliance during World War Two. The spotlight falls on Monty and Ike, then takes in the ordinary "squaddie" who becomes a pawn in the game, and finally Montgomery's unsuccessful attempt to assert Britain's superiority in the closing months of the war. In 1921, three years after the end of World War I, the United States prepared to fight Britain, her wartime ally. The 'special relationship' has been a preoccupation, especially on the British side, since the early 20th century. Recent events in Iraq have yet again brought the 'special relationship' under intense scrutiny. This is a flesh and blood portrait of two of the most charismatic figures of World War II who are, perhaps, too often, eulogised. Charles Whiting, author of the Spellmount Siegfried Line series, is one of the UK's most prolific military writers, and approaches his subject with his characteristic authority and insight.

282. THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE: THE LOSHEIM GAP - DOORWAY TO THE MEUSE - U.S. TROOPS BLOCK NORTHERN GERMAN ADVANCES
Hans Wijers, S,O,

This book describes the combat that took place at the
Losheim Gap during the Ardennes Offensive. This area was part of the
sector assigned to the American 99th Infantry Division from December
15th to the establishment of the American defensive positions along
Elsenborn Ridge. The information presented is based on official U.S.
Army documents (AARs - After Action Reports), combined with numerous
interviews with members of the 99th Infantry Division and its
supporting troops, complemented by eye-witness testimonies of several
members of other units that fought in the area. Official documents from
the German side also grace the story, as well as eye-witness testimony
from several former members of German combat units that fought in this
sector of the Ardennes Offensive. The book describes the action at the
"Northern Shoulder" of the Ardennes Offensive -
Losheimergraben, Lanzerath, Krinkelt, Bucholz Station, Mürringen,
Wirzfeld and Elsenborn Ridge - from December 16th, 1944 until the
retreat of U.S. forces and the establishment of a new frontline at
Elsenborn. The "Northern Shoulder" was where the main thrust of the
German Army was halted. After nearly six years of research in the area,
and with the help of many veterans of both German and American units who
fought there, an in-depth account of the combat in this sector of the
Ardennes Offensive is presented. Many first-person accounts are
provided to supplement the operational details found in the original
U.S. and German Army documents. The text is supplemented by numerous
period black & white photographs, maps, copies of
original documents. The many present-day photographs from the area will
cause the reader to feel like they are stepping back in time, because,
even with the passing of nearly sixty years, many of the "wounds" are
still visible. black & white photographs, maps, copies of original documents

286. HILL 112 : CORNERSTONE OF THE NORMANDY CAMPAIGN
Major J.J. How, MC, C,

With 70 black and white photographs, 15 maps. The capture of the town of Caen was the key to victory in the Normandy Campaign and Hill 112 was the key to taking Caen. General Bernard Montgomery, commander of Allied land forces in Normandy, planned to take Caen on the first day of the invasion - 6 June. After some of the most bitter fighting of the campaign, Caen was eventually captured by 18 July. On 3 August the Germans abandoned their positions on Hill 112. Major How, a decorated veteran of the fighting, has produced an enthralling account of the battles for Hill 112 and the two massive British armored offensives intended to capture Caen - Epsom and Goodwood. Sources from both sides, including many dramatic first-hand accounts, have been used to produce a balanced narrative. It was on the front facing the British and Canadian forces that the Germans massed the majority of their armor, including the I and II SS-Panzer-Korps comprising; 1. SS Panzer-Division “Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler”, 12. SS-Panzer-Division “Hitlerjugend”, 9. SS-Panzer-Division “Hohenstaufen”, 10. SS-Panzer-Division “Frundsberg” and SS-schwere-Panzer-Abteilungen 101 and 102 (Tiger). British units facing the Germans included the 15th Scottish Division, 43rd Wessex Division, 49th West Riding Division, 53rd Welsh Division and the 7th (“Desert Rats”), 11th, 79th and Guards Armoured Divisions. Some of the largest tank versus tank engagements of the European campaign took place around Caen.

288. STEEL FROM THE SKY THE JEDBURGH RAIDERS, FRANCE 1944: BEHIND ENEMY LINES IN GERMAN-OCCUPIED EUROPE
Roger Ford, C

To pave the way for the Allied liberation of France, spies and resistance fighters were ordered (in Churchill's words) 'to set Europe ablaze'. The 'Jedburgh' teams were created in 1943 to do just that. It was the first modern multi-national combat unit: American, British and French soldiers combined to form a unique special forces organisation. They fought in uniform, behind German lines, and played a key role in the Allied victory in 1944. Roger Ford has tracked down survivors and their after-action reports to tell their amazing story: classic 'behind the lines' real life action.

290. ENDKAMPF: SOLDIERS, CIVILIANS AND THE DEATH OF THE THIRD REICH
Stephen Fritz, C,

At the end of World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, fearing that retreating Germans would consolidate large numbers of troops in an Alpine stronghold and from there conduct a protracted guerilla war, turned U.S. forces toward the heart of Franconia, ordering them to cut off and destroy German units before they could reach the Alps. Opposing this advance was a conglomeration of German forces headed by SS-Gruppenführer Max Simon, a committed National Socialist who advocated merciless resistance. Under the direction of officers schooled in harsh combat in Russia, the Germans succeeded in bringing the American advance to a grinding halt. Caught in the middle were the people of Franconia. Historians have accorded little mention to this period of violence and terror, but it provides insight into the chaotic nature of life while the Nazi regime was crumbling. Neither German civilians nor foreign refugees acted simply as passive victims caught between two fronts. Throughout the region people pressured local authorities to end the senseless resistance and sought revenge for their tribulations in the "liberation" that followed. Stephen G. Fritz examines the predicament and outlook of American GI’s, German soldiers and officials, and the civilian population caught in the arduous fighting during the waning days of World War II. Endkampf is a gripping portrait of the collapse of a society and how it affected those involved, whether they were soldiers or civilians, victors or vanquished, perpetrators or victims.

294. SECRET CHANNEL TO BERLIN: THE MASSON - SCHELLENBERG CONNECTION AND SWISS INTELLIGENCE IN WWII
Pierre Braunschweig, C,

This book focuses on the delicate connection between the head of Swiss Intelligence, Colonel Roger Masson, and the German Chief of Espionage, SS General Walter Schellenberg. The author had access to hitherto inaccessible documents, including newly discovered material in American archives, to fully illuminate this secret connection for the first time. The book also includes surprising new details about the alarming military threats Switzerland faced in March 1943. Masson's extraordinary secret channel to Berlin was not, of course, the only Swiss intelligence operation during the war. Braunschweig outlines in detail the gradual buildup, tasks and functions of Swiss Intelligence during World War II. He furthermore describes conflicts between Swiss Intelligence and the Federal government in Bern and within the Intelligence service itself. During World War II, Switzerland was famous as a center of spies and espionage fielded by Allies and Axis alike. Less has been known, however, about Switzerland's own Intelligence activities, including its secret sources in Hitler's councils and its counterespionage program at home. With this intensely researched, scholarly, yet exciting book, that gap in the history of wartime Intelligence operations has been filled.

297. ORGANIZATION AND MARKINGS OF UNITED STATES ARMORED UNITS 1918-1941
C,O,

This new book is most likely the first published on the organization and markings of American armor during the years prior to the Second World War. A subject that has long been ignored, the book reveals, through text, drawings and photographs, the colorful markings used by American armored units during this period. Starting with the American Expeditionary Force and the Tank Corps, it works its way through the Infantry-Tank units, mechanized cavalry, the first four armored divisions and even the GHQ tank battalions. Ever wondered what all of these geometric figures on the M2 series light tanks meant? This book will clear up that mystery. What unit does that tank belong to; what year was the photograph taken? The answers will lie within the pages of this book. Over 340 color and b/w illustrations.

298. IN THE SHADOW OF ARNHME: THE BATTLE FOR THE LOWER MAAS, SEPT. TO NOV. 1944
Ken Tout, C,

The Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 has been much publicised, with its extraordinary parachute drop and the gallant defence by Frost’s few men of the bridge at Arnhem. Epics like Cornelius Ryan’s A Bridge too Far have shown in print and on the big screen just how close the campaign was to success. However, its relative failure left the Allies holding a thirty-mile stretch of a single road with the enemy firmly entrenched on both sides. The village of St Oedenrode, at the base of this road, was liberated on 18 September, but Allied troops did not capture Schijndel, four miles away, until 23 October. The Arnhem debacle left vast stretches of Holland to the left and right of the salient occupied by enemy forces, strategically placed to menace any future plans. 40 b&w photos,

300. BEACHHEAD ASSAULT: THE STORY OF THE ROYAL NAVAL COMMANDOS IN WWII
David Lee, C,

The Royal Naval Commandos had one of the most dangerous and the most important tasks of any in World War II--they were first on to the invasion beaches and they were the last to leave. Formed in 1941 as the Royal Naval Beach Parties, many lost their lives in the Dieppe raid. After Dieppe they became fully fledged fighting Commandos with their legendary Fairbairn Sykes commando knives, organized into units from A Commando through to the all-Canadian W Commando. Under their officers, who were designated as Beachmasters, the Royal Naval Commandos led the way on the beaches as part of the Allied landings in Madagascar, Dieppe, North Africa, Pantelleria, Sicily, Salerno, the Volturno River, Anzio, Arakan, D Day, Elba, Walcheren, and Commachio. Their work on the beaches was crucial to the success of the Allied invasions. After the War the Royal Naval Commandos were disbanded and forgotten. Their wartime role was given to the Royal Marines. But now through the personal accounts of many of the Royal Naval Commandos themselves, this book finally tells their remarkable story.

306. PATTON: OLD BLOOD AND GUTS
Trevor Royle, C,

General George Smith Patton came to the fore in the fighting in North Africa and Sicily in 1942 and 1943 as a tough and inspirational field commander who drove his army as relentlessly as he did himself. Arrogant, vainglorious and unpopular with his fellow Allied generals, he was nevertheless one of the great land force commanders of the Second World War. Patton inspired an unswerving loyalty in his men, perhaps difficult to understand in the light of his treatment of them, which was often bullying and sometimes cruel. However, when the raw and untested US soldiers came to face the much-feared German panzer divisions in North Africa, he gave his men the self-belief to take them on. He refused to allow his army to think that they were second best. Trevor Royle portrays the real Patton, a man who behind the bluster was thoughtful and deeply religious with wide interests in literature and military history. Includes 40 b/w photos and maps.

308. BRITISH TANKS IN NORMANDY
Ludovic Fortin, C,O,

A detailed account of the Normandy campaign fought by the British Armoured Divisions and independant Armoured Brigades, from the D-Day landings to Operation Goodwood. The Author, an acknowledged British armor specialist, has divided his work into three parts: the units involved, the AFVs fielded in Normandy, and the doctrine of use of the High Command with its actual effect on the battlefield. Equipped in some cases with obsolescent vehicles, their personnel often under-motivated but often inventive, the British tank formations did not always answer the hopes of the Allied military planners. This book gives a fresh point of view on the whole question.

309. MAILED FIST: 6TH ARMOURED DIVISION AT WAR 1940 - 1945
Ken Ford, C,

Formed in 1940, the British 6th Armoured Division was in the thick of the action in North Africa from December 1942 in the climactic encounters with the Deutsches Afrika Korps. It received its baptism of fire in the battles after Operation ‘Torch’, the Anglo-American amphibious landings. Following Rommel’s bloody defeat of the Americans at the Kasserine Pass in February 1943, 6th Armoured Division stabilised the Allied front line and pushed the Germans back into the path of the advancing Eighth Army. The division went on to take the surrender of Rommel’s famous 90th Light Division and participated in the round up and capitulation of all Axis forces in North Africa in May 1943. Joining Allied forces in Italy for the great Operation ‘Diadem’ attack in May 1944, 6th Armoured Division took part in the fourth battle of Cassino. The division played a key role in the mighty River Po offensive of April 1945, which brought about the rapid collapse and surrender of all Axis forces in Italy. Combining eye witness accounts, unit war diaries and unpublished sources, this is the first history of this distinguished division, composed of battalions from several of the British Army's most famous regiments. 16 b&w illustrations

The six years of prolonged world-wide conflict spawned some 340 serving generals in the British Army. A number are household names (Montgomery, Slim, Wavell) and others well known to historians (Horrocks, Dempsey, Leese). But the vast majority are forgotten except by their families and regiments. They would not be the targets but they would be the unavoidable 'collateral damage' damage as the victorious Allied contemplated an outpost of the German Reich whose commander was refusing to surrender the most heavily armed and defended part of the Atlantic Wall, the part that had not been breached following the success of D-Day, whose commander, Vizeadmiral Friedrich Huffmeier, who, as his forces faced starvation, exclaimed: 'We will eat grass before we surrender!'

314. YOU CAN'T GET MUCH CLOSER THAN THIS: COMBAT WITH COMPANY H, 317TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 80TH DIVISION
A.Z. Adkins, C,

Andrew Z. Adkins, Jr., graduated from The Citadel in May 1943 and immediately attended the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School, where he was commissioned and sent on to the 80th Infantry Division, then undergoing its final training cycle in the California-Arizona desert. Upon reaching the division, 2d Lieutenant Adkins was assigned as an 81mm mortar section leader in Company H, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment. When the 80th Infantry Division completed its training in December 1943, it was shipped in stages to the United Kingdom and then on to Normandy, where it landed on August 3, 1944. There, Lieutenant Adkins and his fellow soldiers took part in light hedgerow fighting that served to shake the division down and familiarize the troops and their officers with combat. The first real test came on August 20, 1944, when the 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry, attacked high ground near Argentan during the Allied drive to seal huge German forces in the Falaise Pocket. While scouting for mortar positions in the woods, Andy Adkins ran into a group of Germans and shot one of them dead with his carbine. This baptism in blood taught him the answer to a question every novice combatant wants to hear: He was cool under fire, capable of killing when facing the enemy. He later wrote, "It was a sickening sight, but having been caught up in the heat of battle, I didn't have a reaction other than feeling I had saved my own life."
Thereafter, the 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry, took part in a succession of bloody battles across France. Ineptly led through the tentures of several battalion commanders, the unit suffered grievous losses even as it took hills and towns away from brave and well-led German veterans. In the course of fighting graphically portrayed in this soldier's memoir, Andy Adkins acted with remarkable skill and courage, placing himself at the forefront of the action whenever he could. His extremely aggressive delivery of critical supplies to a cutoff unit in an embattled French town earned him a Bronze Star Medal, the first such award in his battalion. You Can't Get Much Closer Than This is at heart a young soldier's story of war. In vibrant, piercing terms, a junior officer's coming of age in battle is the compelling focus of page after page of action sequences that add up to a solid description of what modern warfare is really all about.

316.. THE PENDULUM OF BATTLE: OPERATION GOODWOOD JULY 1944
Christopher Dunphie, C,

Operation Goodwood, the largest tank battle involving British troops ever to have taken place, has been a perpetual subject of controversy. Was it intended as a breakout from the Normandy Bridgehead, or not? Was it a success or failure? Did it lead to a severe crisis in confidence over Field Marshal Montgomery's leadership? This book seeks to unearth the true background, reasons, aims and achievement of Goodwood, set in the context of the overall campaign, while bringing the battle to life through personal accounts of some of those involved, both British and German.

320. CHURCHILL'S SECRET WEAPONS : THE STORY OF HOBART'S FUNNIES
Patrick Delaforce, C,

In the dark days when Britain stood alone, Prime Minister Churchill realised that, to win the war against an enemy superior in strength, science had to be harnessed to devise new weapons.Three men had Churchill's confidence; Lord Cherwell (the Prof), his brilliant main scientific adviser; Millis Jefferis who ran MDI (The Toy Factory); and an irascible and eccentric Major General Percy Hobart. Despite being Monty's brother-in-law and a talented tank expert, Hobart had been banished to the Home Guard. Churchill rescued him and tasked him to form, equip and train a secret armored division which went on to storm the Normandy Beaches. Hobart was the mastermind behind an extraordinary collection of tank-based secret weapons (known as Hobart's Funnies) which supported every British and Canadian army and many US divisions for the rest of the War.

321. THE LAST FIGHTING GENERAL: THE BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT TRYON FREDERICK
Anne Hicks, C

This is the full story of the legendary U.S. Army officer who formed, trained, and led the unique bi-national First Special Service Force (popularly known as the “Devil’s Brigade”). Robert T. Frederick was the youngest ground forces general, the youngest division commander, and one of the most decorated American soldiers in World War II. But Frederick was not just a warrior. Highly intelligent, he was an independent thinker who was as courageous and innovative in peacetime as he was in combat. He pioneered racial integration on army training bases, devised training regimens used throughout North America, and left a record that would seem mythical if not documented. The author also reveals why Frederick ended his brilliant career prematurely. over 40 b/w photographs,

324. GI INGENUITY: IMPROVISATION, TECHNOLOGY, AND WINNING WORLD WAR II
James Carafano, C,

World War II saw the first generation of young men that had grown up comfortable with modern industrial technology go into combat. As kids, the GIs had built jalopies in their garage and poured over glossy, full-color issues of Popular Mechanics; they had read Buck Rogers in the Twenty Fifth Century comic books, listened to his adventures on the radio, and watched him pilot rocket ships in the Saturday morning serials at the Bijou. Tinkerers, problem-solvers, risk-takers, and day-dreamers, they were curious and outspoken--a generation well prepared to improvise, innovate, and adapt technology on the battlefield. Since they were also a generation which had unprecedented technology available to them, their ability to innovate with technology proved an immeasurable edge on the field of combat. This book tells their story through the experience of the battle of Normandy, bringing together three disparate brands of history: (1) military history; (2) the history of science and technology; and (3) social, economic, cultural, and intellectual history. All three historical narratives combine to tell the tale of GI genius and the process by which GI ingenuity became an enduring feature of the American citizen-soldier. GI Ingenuity is in large part an old-fashioned combat history, with mayhem and mass slaughter at center stage. It tells the story of death and destruction on the killing fields of Normandy, as well as the battlegrounds that provide the prologue and postscript to the transformation of war that occurred in France in 1944. This story of GI ingenuity, moreover, puts the battles in the context of the immense social, economic, scientific, and technological changes that accompanied the evolution of combat in the twentieth century. GI Ingenuity illustrates the great transition of the American genius in battle from an industrial-age army to a postmodern military. And it does it by looking at the place where the transition happened--on the battlefield.

326. CODE NAME MULBERRY: THE PLANNING, BUILDING & OPERATIONS OF THE NORMANDY CAMPAIGN
Guy Hartcup, C,

Allied leaders and military planners realized early in preparations for the invasion of NW Europe that the massive forces required to defeat Hitler’s armies needed constant resupply of men, equipment, ammunition, fuel and other materials. These would have to come in by sea but it was known that the Germans would not only defend the few major ports but destroy them before withdrawing. The drastic answer was to build two artificial harbours. This extraordinary venture involved the most ingenious engineering and staggering amounts of construction. All this was achieved in a short space of time. Under conditions of great secrecy, codenamed MULBERRY, most of the components were assembled in south-east England, the remainder being built at sites in Scotland and Wales. The book describes not just the methods used but the men who made this miracle possible. How these massive structures fared and the contribution they made is told in this fascinating book. With lllustrations.

328. PERSHING: A HISTORY OF THE MEDIUM TANK T20 SERIES
R. P. Hunnicutt, C,O,

It became apparent early in the war that the American Sherman medium tank, a product of prewar engineering, was no match for the best of the German tanks. Almost three years of intensive development resulted in the introduction of a new American tank, the T26E3 General Pershing, into battle in the closing months of the war in Europe. More than a match for the panzers it faced, the Pershing proved itself in combat. The Pershing served as the Army's first-line tank during the immediate postwar period. During the first year of the Korean War it played a major role in blunting the threat of Russian-built T34 tanks, which proved to be no match for the Pershing's 90mm main gun. over 500 photos, color art and scale drawings.

330. CORPS COMMANDERS OF THE BULGE: SIX AMERICAN GENERALS AND VICTORY IN THE ARDENNES
Harold Winton, C,

If the Battle of the Bulge was Germany’s last gasp, it was also America’s proving ground—the largest single action fought by the U.S. Army in World War II. Taking a new approach to an old story, Harold Winton widens our field of vision by showing how victory in this legendary campaign was built upon the remarkable resurrection of our truncated interwar army, an overhaul that produced the effective commanders crucial to GI success in beating back the Ardennes counteroffensive launched by Hitler’s forces. Winton’s is the first study of the Bulge to examine leadership at the largely neglected level of corps command. Focusing on the decisions and actions of six Army corps commanders—Leonard Gerow, Troy Middleton, Matthew Ridgway, John Millikin, Manton Eddy, and J. Lawton Collins—he recreates their role in this epic struggle through a mosaic of narratives that take the commanders from the pre-war training grounds of America to the crucible of war in the icy-cold killing fields of Belgium and Luxembourg. Winton introduces the story of each phase of the Bulge with a theater-level overview of the major decisions and events that shaped the corps battles and, for the first time, fully integrates the crucial role of airpower into our understanding of how events unfolded on the ground. Unlike most accounts of the Ardennes that chronicle only the periods of German and American initiative, Winton’s study describes an intervening middle phase in which the initiative was fiercely contested by both sides and the outcome uncertain. His inclusion of the principal American and German commanders adds yet another valuable layer to this rich tapestry of narrative and analysis. Ultimately, Winton argues that the flexibility of the corps structure and the competence of the men who commanded the six American corps that fought in the Bulge contributed significantly to the ultimate victory. Chronicling the human drama of commanding large numbers of soldiers in battle, he has produced an artful blend of combat narrative, collective biography, and institutional history that contributes significantly to the broader understanding of World War II as a whole. 32 photographs, 9 maps,

AF VISUAL: LATE WAR U.S. TANKS, THE PERSHING, CHAFFEE AND M40 SPG
David, S,O,

Printed in landscape format, this book covers three vehicles, the T26E3/M26 Pershing, the M24 Chaffee, and the M40 self-propelled gun. Coverage is not equal, with over 60 pages devoted to the Pershing, 22 to the Chaffee, and 17 to the T83/T89/M40 (the T83 was the pilot vehicle sent to Europe with a 155mm gun, while the T89 originally had an 8” howitzer). Aside from period colour photos on the covers (a nice shot of a 1st Armored Division Chaffee on the front and a fascinating photo of a Pershing being transported on a trailer towed by a Diamond T 981 with a fifth wheel), the rest of the book is black and white, with minimal text (except for informative captions, just a short background piece for each vehicle) and lots of big, beautiful photographs. Each of the three subject vehicles is covered in a multifaceted way, with trials and factory photos, in action photos (Second World War only; these vehicles’ extensive postwar service are beyond the scope of this book), tech manual images, and walkaround shots of preserved vehicles.

334. EL ALAMEIN
Francois de Lannoy, C, O, FRENCH TEXT

The history of the Second World War is punctuated with great land, air or sea battles, which are reverently preserved in our collective memory. Their names are usually associated with one or several prominent figures, generals or marshals. Amongst these battles, El Alamein features highly. Forever linked to the names of two great leaders, Rommel and Montgomery, who will be found later in Europe, the battle represents the outcome of a campaign that had started in Egypt and Libya in September 1940. The book traces the sequence of events over the two main phases of the battle: Rommel’s defeat in front of the El Alamein line (1st July- 2nd September 1942), Montgomery’s successful counter-offensive (23rd October – 4th November 1942), followed by the reconquest up to the Tunisian border (5th November – 26th January 1943). The book contains more than 300 photos, many of which have never been previously published, maps and plans.

336. CHURCHILL AND HIS GENERALS
Raymond Callahan, C,

On the eve of World War II, the British army was more an international police force than a true combat-ready fighting machine. Raymond Callahan chronicles its trial-by-fire transformation in a new and unflinching look at Great Britain’s top commanders in the field. Callahan reexamines the much-maligned performance of the British army in that war by reevaluating its commanders’ victories and defeats, their leadership abilities and flaws, and their often rocky relationships with Prime Minister Winston Churchill, whose powerful presence looms over every page. Revisiting wartime theaters stretching from Southeast Asia across India through the Middle East, into North Africa, and across Europe, Callahan revises and expands our understanding of how British commanders—both the best and worst—led their troops and executed their strategies. Callahan explores the way Churchill, with his own ideas about the army’s goals and concerned about the precariousness of his political fortunes, dealt with his generals, who often held views different from his own. He probes the relationship between Churchill’s political goals and war aims, the army’s capabilities, and its generals’ battlefield performance, while assessing the roles of such leaders as Alan Brooke, Bernard Montgomery, Archibald Wavell, Claude Auchinleck, and Harold Alexander. He also reveals why William Slim should be regarded as the outstanding British commander of the war and Britain’s best field commander since Wellington—and how other generals such as Neil Richie, Henry Wilson, and Oliver Leese exemplify the role of chance in history. Past criticism has tended to ignore both the obstacles confronting the army and its dramatic improvement by war’s end. Callahan sets that record straight while offering insight into the evolution of the British wartime army within the contexts of coalition warfare, the constraints of a far-flung Empire, and Churchill’s political concerns and desire to retain a British presence on the world stage. He considers problems posed by manpower, training, doctrine, equipment, and new military technologies and strategies as the army faced a multifront global war that pushed an already overextended fighting force nearly to the breaking point. Churchill and His Generals is the most comprehensive analysis of this wartime relationship, an account of institutional transformation under extreme stress that balances Churchill’s own self-serving memoirs. It clearly demonstrates that what political leaders demand from their armies is less important than what those armies are designed to do—and that this oft-recurring disconnect lies at the root of much wartime civil-military tension.

338. SALERNO 1943: THE ALLIED INVASION OF SICILY
Angus Konstam, C,

In September 1943, in the first weeks of the Allied campaign to liberate Italy, an Anglo-American invasion force of over 80,000 men was nearly beaten back into the sea by the German defenders in a ferocious ten-day battle at Salerno, south of Naples. This is the story of the tense, bitter struggle around the Salerno beachhead which decided the issue and changed the course of the campaign - for those ten critical days the fate of Italy hung in the balance. Using documentary records, memoirs and eyewitness accounts from all sides, Angus Konstam recreates every stage of the battle at every level as it happened, day by day, hour by hour. His painstakingly researched account offers a fresh perspective on a decisive battle that has been neglected by British and American historians in recent years, and it gives a fascinating insight into the realities of warfare in Europe 60 years ago.

339. TANK TURRET FORTIFICATIONS
Neil Short, C,O-

Tank Turret Fortifications traces the origins of the idea from the development of the first armoured turrets in the nineteenth century through to the present day. On the way it covers the inter-war period when the first turrets were used in this way, the Second World War, when tank turrets were used on every front in the European Theatre of Operations, and the post-war period, when tank turrets were used even more widely. The book also details the decline of the idea as countries reassessed the threats they faced and slowly dismantled all their fixed fortifications. Widely used during World War Two and since, tank turret fortifications deserve a history, and Neil Short has spent several years writing this, the first proper study. 200 black & white photographs and diagrams.

343. WORLD WAR TWO MILITARY VEHICLES TRANSPORT & HALFTRACKS
Pat Ware, C,O,

Although tanks and armored cars were perhaps the most potent elements of land armies in the period after World War 1, they represented but a fraction of the military vehicles used by combatants. Whilst armored vehicles and tanks were at the undoubted cutting edge of the German Blitzkrieg offensives in 1939 and 1940, and subsequent campaigns, without vast numbers of ancillary vehicles to move stores, munitions and the infantrymen, who fought beside the armored forces and secured the ground the tanks won, the armored forces would have been hugely exposed to counter-attack or ground to a halt through lack of supplies. It is a truism of war that an army marches on its stomach and the vital role of lorries and other forms of transport cannot be overstated in terms of warfare. In North Africa, for example the stretched and highly exposed supply lines of the Afrika Korps represented a weakness that the British were able to exploit during and after the crucial battle of El-Alamein. Although, increasingly, as World War 2 progressed, military transport, particularly on the Allied side was almost exclusively motor-powered, it is easy to forget that earlier in the war, horse-drawn vehicles were still common. In World War Two Military Vehicles Pat Ware provides a comprehensive illustrated account of the development of military transport during the period from 1939 to 1945. Covering both Allied and Axis equipment, the book is a superbly illustrated and detailed study into an aspect of military history that has often been ignored by researchers and writers who have concentrated solely on the armored vehicles which led the attack. Incorporating some 220 images, both color and monochrome, including specially prepared artworks, the book is an essential work of reference for all military historians of World War 2. color & b/w photos throughout

Jean-Pierre Benamou, S, O-

This book presents an impressive inventory of the gigantic efforts employed by the workshops of the Allies to defeat the Germans. Each GI was backed by 12 tons of equipment; for every infantryman, sailor or airman in action in the Battle of Normandy and later in the Battle for France, 10 soldiers were in support behind, to ensure they obtained their objectives with minimum risk, speed and maximum ease. These were the troops of American, British and Canadian War Effort, (behind-the-lines), whose logistics support, made possible the Allied victory of 1945. Not forgotten are the civilians on war-work, 65 million men and women, united in the vast industrial enterprise who together forged the tools of victory.

From 5 to 20 July 1944 American invasion forces ran into fierce resistance around the French town of Saint-Lô, an important railway and road communications center in Normandy. As well as the Heer divisions such as the Panzer Lehr, GIs had to fight the redoubtable paratroopers and Waffen-SS who made them pay a heavy price for each hedgerow and each village they managed to take. A self-taught historian, Didier Lodieu is the author of several works on the Battle of Normandy, of which he is one of the foremost specialists in France. By going through unit logbooks, contacting veterans, and by conducting research in the field, Didier Lodieu gives us an accurate story of the Battle for Saint-Lô, illustrated with almost 300 previously unpublished photos. color and b/w throughout

347. BATTLE OF WINGEN-SUR-MODER OPERATION NORDWIND
Wallace Robert Cheves Colonel, Infantry, Army United States, Retired, Revised Edition edited by Steven K. Dixon, C,O,

This is a completely revised edition of Col. Cheves' work entitled L'Operation Nordwind et Wingen-sur-Moder (first published privately in 1978 and again in 1979). The book was originally photocopied or mimeographed and distributed to 70th Division veterans. The pictures did not look good and text sometimes ran off the margins. With the help of computer technology, the text, pictures and maps have all been enhanced. This is not a facsimile reprint, but an entirely new edition, completely re-typeset and newly formatted. It is the story of the battle of Wingen-sur-Moder, an important village leading to the Alsatian Plain. If German forces had captured this town in the early days of Operation Nordwind, and had been able to release their reserve Panzer divisions into the plain, the war might have been lengthened. Colonel Cheves commanded the U.S. forces involved in the battle. The 2nd Battalion of the 274th, along with troops from the 276th and supporting elements, defeated two battalions of the battle-hardened 6th SS Mountain Division (Nord). This book, along with Seven Days in January by Wolf Zoepf (Aberjona Press), gives a complete picture of this important battle. Operation Nordwind, launched December 31, 1944, was Hitler's last major offensive. Its' objective-take Alsace Lorraine, split the U.S. Seventh and Third Armies, link up with the Germans in the Colmar Pocket and continue south, routing the French Army. On December 31, 1944, 2nd Battalion of the elite 6th Mountain Division attacked Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace Lorraine and took some 200 POWs, members of the 45th Division. At that time the 275th and 276th Infantry Regiments of the 70th Division were committed to halt the German advance, re-take Wingen and free the American GIs. The 274th Infantry Regiment of the 70th moved in to fill the gap between the 275th and 276th, on January 4th, 1945. On January 5th advanced to the edge of Wingen-sur-Moder and on January 6th began an attack of the German forces. On the evening of January 6th, the Germans launched a counterattack, which was repulsed by G Co., 274th. On the morning of January 7th, the 200+ American prisoners were freed and Wingen-sur-Moder cleared of all German soldiers, and the German offensive in that area brought to a halt. The Second Battalion, 274th Infantry was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its' actions in Wingen - almost unheard of for a unit in its initial combat.

348. THE ARMORED DIVISION AS AN ASSAULT LANDING FORCE
COMMITTEE 34, THE ARMORED SCHOOL, C,O,

Originally prepared by several U.S. Armor officers in 1952, this research report utilized several examples of assault landings during the war to show how armored divisions were utilized in an amphibious assault and the ensuing fighting in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and Okinawa.
Included is a detailed analysis of the doctrine and organization of armored forces used in amphibious landings, special vehicle requirements, naval requirements (deals primarily with the types of landing craft used for landing armored forces, and includes details of the various craft with plan views), and amphibious training. This Monograph is a reprint of "The Armored Division as an Assault Landing Force," a research report prepared at The Armored School, Fort Knox, Kentucky, 1951-1952 by Committee 34, Officers' Advanced Course, The Armored School, 1951-1952 (composed of Lieutenant Colonel Alva T. McDaniel, Major Francis A. Cooch III, Major George V. Labadie, Captain Edwin W. Piburn Jr., and Captain James R. Porta), and published by The Armored School, Fort Knox, Kentucky, in May 1952. The report included several photographs which have not been reproduced in this reprint. The photographs were all copied directly from other published works (including the captions) and have now been seen numerous times in other works. The report's maps and charts have been included.

349. U.S. ARMY ORDNANCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN WWII: A REVIEW
S,

Written just after the war by an unnamed Army officer, this work reviews the activities of the U.S. Army’s Ordnance Department’s research and development of small arms, ammunition, artillery, bombs, armored and unarmored combat and motor transport vehicles, aircraft armament, rockets and launchers, fuels and lubricants, rubber, steel, and ballistics, from 1940 through the end of the war. Also includes details of the effect of climate and terrain upon development trends (jungle, cave, desert, and arctic warfare). Written utilizing numerous source documents, listed in the end notes. The material published in this Monograph is a complete reprint of the text of Chapter 1 (“Review of Ordnance Research and Development in World War II”) of a manuscript in the National Archives (Records Group Number 156, Box A746). The author was not identified on the copy we worked from, although it seems likely this manuscript was written by an officer (or historian) of the U.S. Army’s Ordnance Department, since the author obviously had access to most, if not all, Ordnance Department records. While no date is given as to when the manuscript was originally prepared, it would seem likely that it was written not long after World War II. It was not declassified until 27 September 1958.

353. OPERATION FRESHMAN THE HUNT FOR HITLER'S HEAVY WATER
Jostein Berglyd, C,O-

In February 1943, the heavy water plant in Vermork/Rjukan, that Hitler needed for the making of the atomic bomb, was made useless by a combined British/Norwegian sabotage operation. This operation became a legend in history. What is less well known is the fact that there was an earlier attempt at sabotaging the plant in late 1942. This failed attempt is known in history as "Operation Freshman". This book is about the successful operation, but it is also a book describing the failed one: both what happened before the operation, and during the operation as well as the aftermath. It describes the planning, the German response and the horrible way the German forces treated the British Commandos involved in "Operation Freshman". 80 b/w illustrations, 5 maps

354. STEEDS OF STEEL: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MECHANIZED CAVALRY IN WWII
Harry Yeide, C

In World War II the U.S. Army's mechanized cavalry force served in an astounding variety of ways. Mechanized cavalrymen scouted and fought in tanks, armored cars, and jeeps; battled on and from the sea in tracked amphibians; stormed beaches from landing craft; slipped ashore in rubber rafts from submarines; climbed mountains; battled hand-to-hand; and even occasionally rode horses. This work follows the mechanized cavalry from its earliest days--landing in North Africa during Operation Torch and fighting on the jungle-clad slopes of Guadalcanal--through the campaigns in the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Pacific. Drawing on official after-action reports, contemporary combat records, personal recollections, and interviews conducted by the Army with soldiers shortly after battle, Steeds of Steel provides a vivid picture of what the war was like for the men of the mechanized cavalry. When World War II broke out in 1939, the U.S. Cavalry was still mainly the proud, horse-mounted force it had been since the nations founding; within a year, the cavalry branch had lost its horses and very nearly its mission. Steeds of Steel tells how the cavalrymen carved out a new and critical role on the modern battlefield. Harry Yeide's narrative shows us troopers learning to outwit the enemy in the African desert, on Italian peaks, along European hedgerows, and through Pacific jungles. We see cavalrymen working alone, miles ahead of the nearest friendly units. And we witness the heroic efforts of the mechanized cavalry troop, joining the battle wherever an American infantry division serves. The mechanized cavalry's brilliant legacy has lived on in the armored cavalry for more than half a century. As the U.S. Army debates its role on the battlefield, this volume (illustrated with over two dozen photos and diagrams) reminds us of our enduring debt to this incomparable fighting force.

360. A MAGNIFICENT DISASTER: THE FAILURE OF MARKET GARDEN THE ARNHEM OPERATION, SEPT 1944
David Bennett, C

After Normandy, the most spectacular Allied offensive of World War II was Operation Market Garden, which saw three divisions of paratroopers dropped behind German lines, to be joined by massive armored columns breaking through the front. The ultimate object was to seize a crossing over t the Rhine to outflank the heartland of the Third Reich and force a quick end to the war. The Operation utterly failed, of course, as the 1st British Airborne was practically wiped out, the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions became tied down in vicious combat for months, and the vaunted armored columns were foiled at every turn by improvisational German defenses. In many circles the battle has become known as “Hitler’s last victory.” In this work, many years in the making, Professor Bennett puts forward a complete, balanced and comprehensive account of the British, American, Polish, Canadian and German actions, as well as the strategic background of the Operation in a way not yet done. He shows, for example, that rather than a bridgehead over the Rhine, Montgomery’s ultimate aim was to flank the Ruhr industrial area from the north. The book also deals as never before with the key role of all three Corps of British Second Army, not just Horrocks’ central XXX Corps. For the first time, we learn the dramatic, untold story of how a single company of Canadian engineers achieved the evacuation of 1st Airborne’s survivors back across the Rhine when all other efforts had failed. Also revealed is the scandal of how Polish General Sosabowski was humiliated, insulted and dismissed by the mendacious hostility of the British military authorities. And the book shows, too, how the Operation would have failed at the outset but for the brilliant soldiery of the two American airborne divisions who overcame a variety of odds to achieve their objectives. Respectfully nodding to “A Bridge Too Far” and other excellent works on Market Garden, the author has interviewed survivors, walked the ground, and performed prodigious archival research to increase our understanding of the battle. From the actions of the lowliest soldier to the highest commander, Allied and German, the Operation develops in highly readable style, with the author’s expert analysis unveiling new insights at every step. 16 pages black & white photos maps

361. IN PURSUIT OF HITLER: A BATTLEFIELF GUIDE TO THE SEVENTH (US) ARMY DRIVE
Andrew Rawson, C

This book is a chronology of the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and the famous victory drive of the Seventh Army. It starts at the Worms’ Rhine bridgehead and moves quickly onto Aschaffenburg, before describing the Hammelburg Raid to release US POWs. The seizure of Nuremberg was hugely symbolic and this beautiful city was the scene both of the infamous Nazi Rallies and of course the War Crimes Tribunals. The road to Munich, always worth visiting (bierfest or no bierfest!) is via the Danube crossings and the book takes in the liberation of the appalling Dachau Concentration Camp and the battle at the SS Barracks. Munich was the center of Hitler’s early life and represented his power base. He was imprisoned here and wrote Mein Kampf. The book climaxes with the approach to the Alps and the superb Eagle’s Nest, so popular with tourists. 100 b/w photos

362. DECISION AT STRASBOURG: IKE'S STRATEGIC MISTAKE TO HALT THE SIXTH ARMY GROUP AT THE RHINE IN 1944
David P. Colley, C

In late November 1944, just a day before Lt. Gen. Jacob Devers' Sixth Army Group was to launch a bold attack across the Rhine into Germany, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower ordered a halt to the operation. Such an unexpected opportunity to cross the river, seal off the German 19th Army, and maneuver behind the German 1st Army fighting General George Patton might have ended the war six months early. Until now, few have ever heard about this lost opportunity, and historians have never fully explained why Eisenhower stopped Devers, nor have they analyzed the possible outcome of such an attack. This book does just that, exploring what might have occurred had Ike allowed Devers to cross the river. Colley judiciously cites the opinions of many high-ranking generals, including Patton, that the attack would have been a bold and likely successful maneuver that could have saved thousands of lives. In rolling out this alternative historical perspective, the author offers insights about Eisenhower that illuminate the potential consequences of his cautious leadership and his rejection of a man he disliked and whose strategy he lacked confidence in. Colley points to Ike's reliance on old friends, sometimes regardless of ability, and argues that the conduct of World War II in Europe was often determined by personal amities and animosities. It is the only book to be written about the aborted action and how politics and personalities intervened to deny an opportunity to shorten the war. Its premise is certain to engage all interested in World War II and its lessons. 20 illustrations,

364. FALAISE: THE FLAWED VICTORY - THE DESTRUCTION OF PANZERGRUPPE WEST, AUGUST 1944
Anthony Tucker-Jones, C

The destruction of the trapped German forces in the Falaise pocket in August 1944 is one of the most famous episodes of the Normandy campaign. But myths have grown up around accounts of the battle, and its impact on the course of the war is sometimes misunderstood. In this meticulously researched and perceptive study Anthony Tucker-Jones dispels misconceptions about the battle, describes the combat in graphic detail and reassesses the outcome in the context of the campaign to liberate Europe. He takes a broad view of the sequence of operations that culminated in the battle at Falaise, tracing the course of the campaign mainly from the German viewpoint. For two bloody months the Germans held the Allies at bay following the D-Day landings, but then they were blocked in at Falaise and the area became a killing ground. Some liken the event to Hitler’s defeat at Stalingrad, while others argue the victory was flawed because so many German troops escaped.

367. ARMORED THUNDERBOLT: THE U.S. ARMY SHERMANS IN WWII
Steven Zaloga, C,O,

Some tank crews referred to the American M4 Sherman tank as a "death trap." Others, like Gen. George Patton, believed that the Sherman helped win World War II. So which was it: death trap or war winner? Armor expert Steven Zaloga answers that question by recounting the Sherman’s combat history. Focusing on Northwest Europe (but also including a chapter on the Pacific), Zaloga follows the Sherman into action on D-Day, among the Normandy hedgerows, during Patton’s race across France, in the great tank battle at Arracourt in September 1944, at the Battle of the Bulge, across the Rhine, and in the Ruhr pocket in 1945. 400 b/w photos, including many never published before with riveting accounts of armored warfare in World War II,

370. PATTON'S PEERS: THE FORGOTTEN ALLIED FIELD ARMY COMMANDERS OF THE WESTERN FRONT, 1944 - 45
John English, C,

Through the force of his personality and the headline-grabbing advance of his U.S. Third Army, Gen. George S. Patton has eclipsed the other six men who, like him, led field armies in the great Allied campaign to liberate northwest Europe in 1944-45. Certain to rank among the lassics of World War II history like Eisenhower's Lieutenants by Russell Weigley, Patton's Peers presents a masterful reassessment of the eleven-month struggle from D-Day to Germany's surrender, shedding long-overdue light on the contributions of these forgotten Allied field army commanders. Seasoned military historian John A. English unearths the vital roles played by these six generals. As the leader of an army of several hundred thousand troops, each had to plan operations days and eeks in advance, coordinate air support, assess intelligence, give orders to corps commanders, manage a staff of sometimes difficult subordinates, and deal with superiors like Eisenhower, Bradley, and Montgomery. Some performed less ably than the rest while others rivaled Patton in their achievements. All deserve to be lifted from Patton's shadow.

To support this mission, the engineers modified their tanks with ingenious innovations, such as replacing the main gun with a giant mortar or attaching a steamroller-like device to flatten a path in the sand. In the early hours of D-Day, the brigade landed under fire, and took serious casualties in some areas, but achieved many of its key objectives and cleared the way for the infantry. 175 b/w photos

388. ASSAULT ON GERMANY: THE BATTLE FOR GEILENKIRCHEN
Ken Ford, C,

The Anglo-American battle for the Geilenkirchen salient in November 1944 was infantry warfare at its worst, and it is described in vivid detail in this new edition of Ken Ford’s classic study. The onset of winter saw the Allied advance from the Normandy beaches forced to a halt on Germany’s doorstep. The clock had been put back to the days of the Great War – the Allies had arrived at the Siegfried Line and were forced to attack the fortifications from the hell of the trenches. Geilenkirchen was the first battle on German soil to be fought by the British since Minden in 1759. For them, it was just one more battle on the way to Berlin, but for the American 84th Division, it was a first faltering step into war and a bitter lesson in the attrition and savagery of combat. The story is told by the men who were there – the British, the Americans, and the Germans who were fighting desperately for their homeland. Neither side was victorious - both lost more men than they could afford and paid a heavy price in young lives for a few miles of ground. 40 illustrations

389. HITLER'S GULF WAR: THE FIGHT FOR IRAQ 1941
Barrie G. James, C

During the spring of 1941, on an isolated, indefensible airfield 55 miles from Baghdad a group of poorly armed and outnumbered RAF airman equipped with obsolete aircraft, together with a few soldiers, outfought the much larger and better equipped Iraqi forces who were aided by the Germans and Italians. The engagement would prove to be the first real defeat of the Germans in World War Two. After an heroic defense, the airfield was finally relieved by a hastily assembled column of trucks, taxis, buses and antiquated armored cars carrying infantry and Bedouins. The column had fought its way across a 500 mile barren, unmapped desert enduring temperatures approaching fifty degrees C to reach the airfield. In a gigantic game of bluff less than fifteen hundred soldiers supported by the RAF in their obsolete aircraft against odds of twenty to one went on to take Baghdad. They foiled a coup, returned a King to his throne and destroyed Axis aspirations in the Middle East. This book is based on the research into a wide range of official, academic and public sources. It uses reported American, British, German, Italian and Iraqi dialogue to produce this remarkable account of a thirty day war in Iraq in 1941, how it played out and how it set the scene for Iraq’s turbulent future which has come to haunt the West.

390. CHURCHILL'S UNDERGROUND ARMY: A HISTORY OF THE AUXILIARY UNITS IN WWII
John Warwicker, C,

British Secret Intelligence Service officers and others in the War Office were never convinced that appeasement would prevent a Nazi invasion. Defying high-level opposition, they quietly worked instead on preemptive ‘Last Ditch’ survival plans. These included a secret resistance network known as the GHQ Auxiliary Units. It was the only one in Europe prepared in advance of an enemy assault. The Auxunits were civilian ‘stay-behinds’. One section worked as Patrols, usually consisting of half-a-dozen men in hidden underground operational bases. They were hurriedly selected immediately after the Dunkirk evacuation then trained and equipped with firearms, explosives and booby-traps. Instructed to ‘stay-behind’ underground as the enemy passed over, they were then to emerge each night to commit mayhem for as long as they could stay alive. Others, men and women, would remain behind above ground, to spy on the enemy and communicate intelligence to the Defence Force by a covert radio network. These Units are still effectively secret and this is the most comprehensive history published to date. 32 pages of plates

391. OPERATION DRAGOON: THE LIBERATION OF SOUTHERN FRANCE 1944
Anthony Tucker-Jones, C,

Operation Dragoon, the Allied landings in the south of France in August 1944, is often seen as a sideshow supporting Operation Overlord, the crucial D-Day landings in Normandy. And often the operation is criticized as an expensive diversion of men and equipment from the struggle against the German armies in Italy. Yet, as Anthony Tucker-Jones shows in his new in-depth study, Dragoon and the subsequent Allied advance across southern France were key stages in the liberation of Europe, and the operation had far-reaching political and military ramifications. Controversy dogged the plan from the start. Fierce disagreement among the senior Allied commanders and politicians - in particular between Churchill, Eisenhower and de Gaulle - threatened to weaken the Anglo-American war effort. In vivid detail Anthony Tucker-Jones tells the story of the high-level strategic argument that gave birth to Dragoon, and he looks at the impact of the operation on the direction and duration of the war against Nazi Germany. He also describes the course of the invasion on the ground - the massive logistical effort required, the landings themselves, the role played by the French resistance, and the bitter battles fought against German rearguards as they sought to retain France's southern cities and cover their withdrawal toward the strategic Belfort Gap. 30 illustrations

392.THE BATTLE FOR WESTERN EUROPE FALL 1944: AN OPERATIONAL ASSESSMENT
John Adams, C,

This engrossing and meticulously researched volume reexamines the decisions made by Dwight D. Eisenhower and his staff in the crucial months leading up to the Battle of the Bulge. In late August 1944 defeat of the Wehrmacht seemed assured. On December 16, however, the Germans counterattacked. Received wisdom says that Eisenhower’s Broad Front strategy caused his armies to stall in early September, and his subsequent failure to concentrate his forces brought about deadlock and opened the way for the German attack. Arguing to the contrary, John A. Adams demonstrates that Eisenhower and his staff at SHAEF had a good campaign strategy, refined to reflect developments on the ground, which had an excellent chance of destroying the Germans west of the Rhine. 20 maps

394. BROWNING AUTOMATIC RIFLE THE AMERICAN FIREPOWER SERIES
Tom Laemlein, S,O,

The BAR has been described as too heavy to be an automatic rifle and too light to be a true light machine gun. But these comments come from those who don’t know the combat effectiveness of this fine weapon. Developed in time to see limited action in WWI, the BAR served American forces until the late 1950s. The images in this long-awaited photo study support the GI’s love for the BAR. Offering more than 200 images, many never before seen, this book shows the BAR in combat everywhere it served from WWI through WWII and into the Korean War.

396. SWEDES AT WAR: WILLING WARRIORS OF A NEUTRAL NATION, 1914 - 1945
Lars Gyllenhall, S,

From the mud and bloody hell of Flanders to forlorn battles in Siberia and bitter street fighting in the very heart of Berlin 1945. From Africa to the Arctic, fighting men from a country frowned upon for its "cowardly" neutrality participated in all the crucial battles of World Wars I and II. Their homeland was Sweden, which has enjoyed almost two hundred years of peace. Swedes at War is the first book in English to reveal that, despite Sweden's policy of neutrality, no fewer than 23,000 Swedish citizens went to war between 1914 and 1945. Swedes at War also puts an end to the myth that most Swedes enlisted in Hitler's forces. Only 200 joined the Waffen-SS or the Wehrmacht of 1939–1945. In the same period 9,000 Swedish citizens joined the Americans, the British, the Norwegians, and the Poles. In addition, well over 200,000 men of Swedish descent served in the US, British, Canadian, and Australian Armed Forces--facts in which Americans, Australians, Britons, and Canadians of Swedish descent can take pride. 4 maps, 132 photos.

397. OPERATION BLUECOAT BREAKOUT FROM NORMANDY - OVER THE BATTLEFIELD
Ian Daglish, C

After seven weeks of bitter fighting there was a desperate need to break out of the Normandy bridgehead. In late July 1944 Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey’s Second Army moved two entire corps from the Caen sector to the relatively quiet countryside around Caumont. Here, the British XXX Corps prepared to give battle, with VII Corps advancing in support on the right flank between XXX Corps and the American first Army. The offensive did not go to plan. While the XXX Corps attack stalled, VIII Corps surged ahead. With the experienced 11th Armoured and 15th Scottish Divisions in the lead and Guards Armoured close behind, a deep penetration was made, threatening to take the pivotal city of Vire and unhinge General Hausser’s German Seventh Army. The main narrative of this book will span the initial break-in from Caumont on 30 July, through the armored battles of the following days, to the desperate German counter-attacks of 4 – 6 August, the no less desperate German defense of Estry up to the middle of the month, and the final withdrawal from Normandy. The book also examines Monty’s refusal to seize Vire, the disputed Anglo-American border and the Operation’s impact on the German Mortain offensive. 120 illustrations
