The armored half-track was one of the few vehicles available to equip the
new divisions being formed just prior to World War II. A product of a prewar
development program, the first production vehicles were delivered in May
1941.
Part I traces the early development beginning with the slow half-track of
World War I to the faster vehicles developed after the evaluation of the
French Citroen-Kegresse P17 in 1931. These vehicles were unarmored
half-track cars and trucks intended for use as prime movers and
reconnaissance vehicles.
In 1938, the half-track suspension was installed on the M2A1 scout car and
the converted vehicle became the half-track personnel carrier T7. This was
the first armored half-track, but tests showed that it was underpowered.
Based upon the experience with the T7, a new vehicle was designed in 1939
and designated as the half-track scout car T14. Using the half-track
suspension from the T7 and a more powerful engine, it became the prototype
for all of the half-tracks produced during World War II.
In Part II, the development and production of half-tracks during World War
II is described showing the many roles for which it was adapted. In addition
to the original armored scout car, the basic chassis was adapted as a
personnel carrier, mortar carrier, tank destroyer, self-propelled artillery,
and other specialized applications. Some of these vehicles were temporary
expedients, but others were so successful that they remained in use until
long after World War II.
Part III briefly describes some half-track operations during World War II
and Korea. However, it is not intended to be an operational history, but to
illustrate the effectiveness of the half-track in active service. The
characteristics of the various half-track vehicles and the weapons with
which some of them were armed are tabulated in the data sheets in Part IV.

Adkins, Jr., graduated from The Citadel in May 1943 and immediately attended the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School, where he was commissioned and sent on to the 80th Infantry Division, then undergoing its final training cycle in the California-Arizona desert. Upon reaching the division, 2d Lieutenant Adkins was assigned as an 81mm mortar section leader in Company H, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment. When the 80th Infantry Division completed its training in December 1943, it was shipped in stages to the United Kingdom and then on to Normandy, where it landed on August 3, 1944. There, Lieutenant Adkins and his fellow soldiers took part in light hedgerow fighting that served to shake the division down and familiarize the troops and their officers with combat. The first real test came on August 20, 1944, when the 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry, attacked high ground near Argentan during the Allied drive to seal huge German forces in the Falaise Pocket. While scouting for mortar positions in the woods, Andy Adkins ran into a group of Germans and shot one of them dead with his carbine. This baptism in blood taught him the answer to a question every novice combatant wants to hear: He was cool under fire, capable of killing when facing the enemy. He later wrote, "It was a sickening sight, but having been caught up in the heat of battle, I didn't have a reaction other than feeling I had saved my own life."
Thereafter, the 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry, took part in a succession of bloody battles across France. Ineptly led through the tentures of several battalion commanders, the unit suffered grievous losses even as it took hills and towns away from brave and well-led German veterans. In the course of fighting graphically portrayed in this soldier's memoir, Andy Adkins acted with remarkable skill and courage, placing himself at the forefront of the action whenever he could. His extremely aggressive delivery of critical supplies to a cutoff unit in an embattled French town earned him a Bronze Star Medal, the first such award in his battalion. This is a completely revised edition of Col. Cheves' work entitled L'Operation Nordwind et Wingen-sur-Moder (first published privately in 1978 and again in 1979). The book was originally photocopied or mimeographed and distributed to 70th Division veterans. The pictures did not look good and text sometimes ran off the margins. With the help of computer technology, the text, pictures and maps have all been enhanced. This is not a facsimile reprint, but an entirely new edition, completely re-typeset and newly formatted. It is the story of the battle of Wingen-sur-Moder, an important village leading to the Alsatian Plain. If German forces had captured this town in the early days of Operation Nordwind, and had been able to release their reserve Panzer divisions into the plain, the war might have been lengthened. Colonel Cheves commanded the U.S. forces involved in the battle. The 2nd Battalion of the 274th, along with troops from the 276th and supporting elements, defeated two battalions of the battle-hardened 6th SS Mountain Division (Nord). This book, along with Seven Days in January by Wolf Zoepf (Aberjona Press), gives a complete picture of this important battle. Operation Nordwind, launched December 31, 1944, was Hitler's last major offensive. Its' objective-take Alsace Lorraine, split the U.S. Seventh and Third Armies, link up with the Germans in the Colmar Pocket and continue south, routing the French Army. On December 31, 1944, 2nd Battalion of the elite 6th Mountain Division attacked Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace Lorraine and took some 200 POWs, members of the 45th Division. At that time the 275th and 276th Infantry Regiments of the 70th Division were committed to halt the German advance, re-take Wingen and free the American GIs. The 274th Infantry Regiment of the 70th moved in to fill the gap between the 275th and 276th, on January 4th, 1945. On January 5th advanced to the edge of Wingen-sur-Moder and on January 6th began an attack of the German forces. On the evening of January 6th, the Germans launched a counterattack, which was repulsed by G Co., 274th. On the morning of January 7th, the 200+ American prisoners were freed and Wingen-sur-Moder cleared of all German soldiers, and the German offensive in that area brought to a halt. The Second Battalion, 274th Infantry was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its' actions in Wingen - almost unheard of for a unit in its initial combat.

Written just after the war by an unnamed Army officer, this work reviews the activities of the U.S. Army’s Ordnance Department’s research and development of small arms, ammunition, artillery, bombs, armored and unarmored combat and motor transport vehicles, aircraft armament, rockets and launchers, fuels and lubricants, rubber, steel, and ballistics, from 1940 through the end of the war. Also includes details of the effect of climate and terrain upon development trends (jungle, cave, desert, and arctic warfare). Written utilizing numerous source documents, listed in the end notes. The material published in this Monograph is a complete reprint of the text of Chapter 1 (“Review of Ordnance Research and Development in World War II”) of a manuscript in the National Archives (Records Group Number 156, Box A746). The author was not identified on the copy we worked from, although it seems likely this manuscript was written by an officer (or historian) of the U.S. Army’s Ordnance Department, since the author obviously had access to most, if not all, Ordnance Department records. While no date is given as to when the manuscript was originally prepared, it would seem likely that it was written not long after World War II. It was not declassified until 27 September 1958.

After seven weeks of bitter fighting there was a desperate need to break out of the Normandy bridgehead. In late July 1944 Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey’s Second Army moved two entire corps from the Caen sector to the relatively quiet countryside around Caumont. Here, the British XXX Corps prepared to give battle, with VII Corps advancing in support on the right flank between XXX Corps and the American first Army. The offensive did not go to plan. While the XXX Corps attack stalled, VIII Corps surged ahead. With the experienced 11th Armoured and 15th Scottish Divisions in the lead and Guards Armoured close behind, a deep penetration was made, threatening to take the pivotal city of Vire and unhinge General Hausser’s German Seventh Army. The main narrative of this book will span the initial break-in from Caumont on 30 July, through the armored battles of the following days, to the desperate German counter-attacks of 4 – 6 August, the no less desperate German defense of Estry up to the middle of the month, and the final withdrawal from Normandy.
