THE WAR DIARY OF DR. WILHELM MAUSS 1ST SEPTEMBER - FEBRUARY 1947: BEING A MEDICAL OFFICER IN WORLD WAR 2

  • Price: $87.50

Book Type: C,O,

by Hans-Jorg Mauu and Roger de Rijke, 470 pages.

Dr. Mauss served as division doctor of the 20th Infantry Division and wrote almost daily about what was going on at the top of the division. Later on he was a corps doctor in Italy. There are several hundred of his own photos within the book. It starts with a small chapter from his youth in several military student movements, volunteer in the Great War and at the Heeressanitätsinspektion during the Polish campaign. Then he became divisional doctor of the 20th infantry division just before the start of the French campaign and he remained there until early 1943. Then he was transferred to France for a short while and then to Italy where is was Corps doctor until his capture in 1945. He was awarded the German Cross in Silver for his actions on Sicily. Then POW and release in 1947

The views in this diary written by a staff officer right up at the front are German nationalistic, as it reflects the spirit of the time and is carried forward by the worries of the medical officers for the well-being of the wounded who have been trusted into their hands.

The characteristics of this period of war and the period prior to that are those of a high ranking medical officer in a way, so that the events were elaborately written down almost daily and that the precise facts about medical events were immediately put down in writing in a timely fashion, as well as the location and the personnel involved. At the same time the diarist comments on the political happenings from his point of view and he discusses them along with the historical facts of the past and the possible German future. These contemporary considerations are valuable in themselves, because immediate happenings only give a brief impression, and often can no longer be felt in their fresh immediacy by the direct witnesses to them -how difficult will it be then for those born later on to understand this part of German history? A diary like this then would unintentionally go against the current spirit of the time. One cannot solve the problems our parents faced by moving away from or even denouncing them, because they had been captured within their own spirit of time, just as we are within ours. Only this bridge of knowledge regarding the deeds and thoughts of our parents can unfold a large section of their views on the history of that period.

An attentive and patient reader will also be impressed by the change in personality from a stubbornly German nationalist into an open patriot with democratic ideas, experienced by the diarist through his experiences and suffering.
